Surrey beat Northamptonshire Steelbacks by six wickets in the One-Day Cup at Guildford on Sunday, chasing down 255 with 41 balls remaining. Half-centuries from Adam Thomas and Ryan Patel anchored the run chase after Surrey’s bowlers had restricted Northants to 254 for 8 in their 50 overs.
Northamptonshire won the toss and were sent in to bat first. They never fully broke free of the pressure applied by Surrey’s attack, though a fourth-wicket stand between Nathan McSweeney and George Bartlett briefly threatened to push the total closer to 300.
Patel and Thomas Steer Surrey’s Chase
Surrey’s reply began with intent. Dom Sibley and Patel put on 91 runs in 11.5 overs, with Sibley hitting two sixes in his innings of 33, including one that cleared the ground and landed in a petrol station across the road. Patel went on to score 64 off 55 balls, striking nine fours and two sixes before edging Rob Keogh behind to the wicketkeeper.
Thomas remained unbeaten on 83 from 84 balls, an innings built on control rather than pure aggression. It was his third significant score in as many matches this season, taking his tally to 222 runs for once out across Surrey’s first three games in this year’s competition. He added 58 with captain Rory Burns, who scored 27 and hit a six off India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, and then shared an 80-run stand with Josh Blake, who contributed 36 as Surrey closed out the match with more than six overs unused.
Bowlers Set Up the Chase Early

Northamptonshire’s innings never found consistent rhythm against Surrey’s bowling attack. Ricardo Vasconcelos was out leg-before to Benji Floros for just a single, and Rob Keogh followed soon after, dismissed by James Taylor for 10. Gus Miller added 35 before Yousef Majid had him caught behind, leaving Northants at 103 for three at the halfway stage of their innings.
McSweeney and Bartlett then rebuilt through a stand of 97 in 18 overs, both reaching half-centuries with a six and four boundaries apiece. The partnership ended abruptly in the 39th over: Bartlett was run out after Floros deflected a straight drive onto the stumps, and McSweeney was dismissed two balls later attempting a square cut.

Floros Finishes with Four Wickets
Aadi Sharma and Luke Procter added some late impetus, scoring 32 and 23 respectively, but Floros returned in the final over to remove both batters and finish with figures of 4 for 60 from his ten overs. Majid took 2 for 42 with his left-arm spin, while Taylor also contributed to keeping the Northants total below 260.
Surrey’s bowling effort set the platform, and the batting unit completed the job with time to spare. The result gives Surrey four points from the fixture, while Northamptonshire were left with none. Surrey’s top-order form, particularly from Thomas, continues to stand out through the early rounds of this year’s One-Day Cup campaign.
