Surrey Claim First Victory After Sussex Put Up Stubborn Fight

Surrey Beat Sussex to Claim First Championship Win of 2026

Surrey ended their wait for a first County Championship win of the season on Monday, beating Sussex by eight wickets at the Kia Oval after a final day that tested their patience far longer than expected.

Three draws had preceded this match, leaving Surrey in need of a convincing result. They got one, but Sussex made them earn every point across all four days.

Sussex Fight Back Hard on the Final Morning

Going into the last day, Sussex were 76-4 in their second innings, still 188 runs short of making Surrey bat again. Few expected them to last long. They lasted 85 overs.

Charlie Tear, just 21, played the innings of his career. He made 61 from 131 balls, spending just over three hours at the crease and hitting six fours. It was his second half-century in only four first-class appearances, and he batted with a composure that belied his age.

Jack Carson, who had already scored a century in the first innings, came in and batted with the same authority he showed earlier in the match. He added 48 in the second innings, hitting Dan Lawrence over the boundary for six and pulling Reece Topley over mid-wicket just as cleanly. Carson and Tear put on 82 together before Abbott broke the stand by trapping Carson leg before.

Sussex captain Ollie Robinson also contributed 42, and opener Tom Haines — who had retired hurt the previous day after being struck on the helmet grille — returned to bat at number ten and finished unbeaten on 20. His partnership of 35 with Robinson either side of the second new ball forced Surrey to come back out after tea.

Eventually, Jordan Clark had Robinson edging behind in the 84th over, and Matt Fisher wrapped up the innings by hitting number eleven Henry Crocombe on the pad. Sussex were all out for 277.

Clark and Fisher Do the Damage With Ball

Clark finished with 3-40 in the second innings, taking his match tally to eight wickets and his season tally to 12. Fisher also took three, finishing with 3-52. Sean Abbott chipped in with two wickets during the morning session, removing Fynn Hudson-Prentice with an outswinger that the batsman edged through to keeper Jamie Smith.

The first wicket of the day came in Clark’s second over, when Daniel Hughes pushed loosely at a ball angled across him and edged to Rory Burns at first slip. From there, Surrey worked through the order steadily, though Carson and Tear made them toil.

Surrey needed only 14 to win and got there in four overs after tea, though they lost two wickets in the process. Burns was given out leg before to James Coles sweeping — a decision that looked generous — and Ryan Patel followed next ball, plumb in front.

Dom Sibley, who had scored 187 in the first innings, finished unbeaten on four alongside Ollie Pope, who knocked off the remainder with two boundaries.

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty said his side were going in the right direction but acknowledged there was still work to do. Batty pointed to Sibley’s first innings as an example of what the team could produce, noting how the opener both set a platform and scored at pace when the opportunity came.

Sussex captain Robinson said his side needed to find ways to be tougher and post bigger scores, adding that Carson remained a player they relied on heavily. Surrey take 22 points from the match. Sussex take four.
