Manav Suthar took five wickets for the second time this season as Warwickshire beat Essex by eight wickets inside two days at Chelmsford. The result puts Warwickshire on top of the County Championship Division One table, pending the outcome of matches involving Somerset and Nottinghamshire.
Suthar’s Five-Wicket Haul Puts Essex Under Pressure
Suthar finished with figures of 5 for 75 as Essex were bowled out for 189 in their second innings, leaving Warwickshire needing 133 to win. The 24-year-old, who made his India debut three months ago, has now taken 26 wickets in five Championship matches this season.
Paul Walter top-scored with 42 before he was caught by Chris Woakes off Suthar, attempting to hit the spinner over cow corner. Dean Elgar, playing his final innings at Chelmsford before retirement, made 29 and was given a guard of honour after he was caught at short leg off Suthar. George Bell was lbw to Suthar attempting to work the ball through midwicket, and both Sam Cook and Jack Auld fell lbw late in the innings, to Suthar and Woakes respectively. Woakes finished with 3 for 33.
Warwickshire had built a first-innings lead of 57, with Sam Hain unbeaten on 88 off 57 overs and Matt Critchley taking 4 for 54 for Essex, including the wicket of Olly Hannon-Dalby after a long resistance at the crease.
Malik’s Fifty Sets Up the Chase
Zen Malik scored 51 off 55 balls, including four sixes, before he was caught at deep mid-off trying to hit a fifth. His innings gave Warwickshire early momentum in the chase after Rob Yates was dismissed for 33.
Dan Mousley finished unbeaten on 26, and Hain added an unbeaten 22 as Warwickshire reached 138 for 2 in 25.3 overs, completing the win in the sixth of the extra overs allotted to force a result.
Warwickshire must now wait on results elsewhere before learning their position ahead of next week’s final round of matches, while Essex have lost four of their last five games and are now focused on the lower half of the table.

Injuries Force Essex Into Two Debut Changes
Essex made two injury substitutions on the second morning. Captain Tom Westley injured a finger while fielding and was replaced by Luc Benkenstein, while Shane Snater was ruled out with a leg injury, bringing in 17-year-old Jack Auld for his first-class debut.
Auld had played for England Under-19s two days earlier, taking 3 for 67 in a two-run ODI win over Pakistan. He picked up his maiden first-class wicket with the fourth ball of his career, dismissing Yates during Warwickshire’s run chase. Earlier in the Essex innings, Ed Barnard took the wicket of Charlie Allison, caught behind off an inside edge, while Ethan Bamber picked up his seventh wicket of the match by bowling Noah Thain.
Critchley was dismissed four balls later, caught behind off Suthar. Essex’s lead stood at 110 at tea, and they lost further wickets in quick succession after the break, including Benkenstein bowled by Woakes without addition to the score, before the innings folded for 189.
The defeat leaves Essex with four losses in their last five matches and out of contention at the top of the table. Warwickshire, chasing their fourth win in five games, now sit in pole position with one round of fixtures remaining, and the result of games involving Somerset and Nottinghamshire will decide their exact standing heading into the final week.
