James Vince smashed the highest individual score in Vitality Blast knockout history as Hampshire thrashed Essex by 75 runs in the first quarter-final at the Utilita Bowl on July 15. Vince’s 125 off 61 balls set up a target of 212, and Sonny Baker followed it with a five-wicket haul to book Hampshire a place in their record 12th Finals Day.
Hampshire posted 211 for 3 after being sent in to bat, and Essex could only manage 136 for 9 in reply. The result extends Hampshire’s dominance in Blast quarter-finals. They have now won 12 in a row at this stage of the competition, with their only defeat coming back in 2009. Hampshire will meet Notts Outlaws in the second semi-final at Edgbaston on Saturday as they chase a fourth Blast title.
Vince Breaks Record With Career-Best Blast Innings
Vince started cautiously against the new-ball swing of Sam Cook after Essex captain Simon Harmer won the toss and chose to field. He found his rhythm in the fifth over, striking four boundaries off five balls from Shane Snater, and did not slow down from there. He played shots to every part of the ground, mixing pulls and drives through the innings.
Toby Albert put on 60 with Vince for the first wicket before Joe Weatherley joined him for a stand of 117. Weatherley made 46 off 26 balls, a knock that kept the scoreboard moving but was overshadowed by his partner’s innings.
Vince was dropped on 46 but otherwise batted without error. His first fifty came off 38 balls, and he added the next fifty in just 16 more, bringing up his century with a six. He was eventually caught off Snater for 125, one short of a personal milestone he had not quite planned for, but his score passed Moeen Ali’s 121 from the 2019 quarter-finals to become the highest knockout total in Blast history.
It was also his second century against Essex and the eighth of his T20 career, a run that started with a hundred against Worcestershire in a 2015 quarter-final.
Baker’s Early Burst Derails Essex Chase
Essex never recovered from Baker’s opening spell. He removed Paul Walter, caught and bowled, before Jordan Cox was caught brilliantly at short third by Andrew Neal. Michael Pepper edged a short ball behind soon after, and Baker had three wickets inside his first two overs.
Charlie Allison top-scored for Essex with 44 off 33 balls, but wickets fell around him at regular intervals. Luc Benkenstein and Matt Critchley were both caught, and Allison was eventually held on the boundary.
Baker returned later in the innings to trap Harmer lbw and bowl Snater, taking his tally to 5 for 24, his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 cricket. Essex finished at 136 for 9, well short of the target, as Hampshire’s bowlers shared the wickets among Baker, James Fuller, Andrew Neal and Scott Currie.

Hampshire’s win keeps their unbeaten knockout record intact at home this season and sets up a semi-final against Notts Outlaws on Saturday.
