Royal Challengers Bengaluru made a bold but calculated call for their IPL 2026 clash against Lucknow Super Giants on April 15 by not naming Virat Kohli in the starting XI. Instead, he was listed as an Impact Player substitute, a move that pointed directly to fitness management rather than any form of selection drama.
The reasoning traces back to RCB’s previous match against the Mumbai Indians. Kohli had batted in that game and scored a half-century, but he did not take the field during Mumbai’s chase. He had picked up an ankle issue. That context made the call against LSG far easier to understand.
How the Impact Player Rule Worked in RCB’s Favour
The Impact Player rule allowed RCB to keep Kohli completely out of the fielding innings and bring him in only when they needed to bat. He replaced Suyash Sharma at the end of the LSG innings, at the 19.6 over mark, and walked in to open the RCB chase.
Fielding for 20 overs puts a different kind of physical load on a player: quick turns, boundary running, sudden stops. For someone managing an ankle niggle, that risk is real. RCB chose to protect him from that while keeping him available with the bat.
This was not a tactical batting-bowling switch, which is the more common use of the rule. RCB used it as a fitness tool. It let them field a full bowling unit in the first innings and still have Kohli ready for the second.
Kohli’s Impact With the Bat Against LSG
The gamble paid off when Kohli came in and took charge from the start. He hit six fours and a six off 34 balls and completed his 49 before he got caught by Nicholas Pooran off Avesh Khan in the 13th over.
The power play ended with RCB at 60/1 with Kohli already at 40 after 20 balls. He struck three boundaries off Mohammed Shami and four off Prince Yadav. The chase was launched in his innings. RCB would then win by five wickets, reaching 149/5 with 29 balls remaining; LSG had 146.
Kohli now leads the IPL 2026 Orange Cap race with 228 runs across 5 matches. He is closely followed by Heinrich Klaasen (SRH) with 224 runs and Rajat Patidar (RCB) with 222 runs.

RCB Climb to the Top of IPL 2026 Table.
The victory earned RCB eight points after five matches, placing them on top of the IPL 2026 points table. LSG were missing their regular captain, Rishabh Pant, who was forced to retire early on in their innings. In his absence, their side was headed by Nicholas Pooran.
Josh Hazlewood was awarded the Player of the Match for his tight bowling performance during LSG’s innings.
RCB next face the Delhi Capitals on April 18 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Meanwhile, LSG play the Punjab Kings on April 19 at New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh.
