Worcestershire took control of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Kent at the St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury, bowling the hosts out for 238 on the opening day before reaching 80 for 2 in reply.
Stumps came with the visitors trailing by 158 runs, unbeaten batters Daniel Lategan and Adam Hose steering their side through the closing overs.
Kent Lose Last Five Wickets for 25
Kent chose to bat after Worcestershire won the toss and elected to field, but the innings never settled into a rhythm. Zak Crawley fell for six in the fourth over and edged Ben Allison to second slip, and Ben Compton followed shortly after for eight, strangled by Tom Taylor.
Sam Northeast and Tawanda Muyeye pushed the score to 90 before rain forced an early lunch. Muyeye added ten more runs off Adam Finch after the resumption, then swished a catch to midwicket, and Northeast edged behind for 43 in the same over.
Daniel Bell-Drummond anchored the innings and reached fifty just before tea, but Kent lost their last five wickets for only 25 runs in the evening session. He was eventually trapped lbw by Matthew Waite, and the tail offered little resistance as Matt Quinn holed out to Taylor to end the innings with 25 overs still unused.
Tom Taylor and Henry Cullen Star With Ball
Tom Taylor finished with figures of 3 for 55 from 14.2 overs, removing Compton, Milnes, and Quinn across the day. Ben Allison and Matthew Waite picked up two wickets apiece, while Beyers Swanepoel and Adam Finch also chipped in with a wicket each as Kent’s middle and lower order struggled to build partnerships.

Behind the stumps, wicketkeeper Henry Cullen held five catches. It is a number that underlined how often Kent’s batters edged behind rather than being cleanly bowled or dismissed in the field.
Chris Benjamin made a useful 40 before nicking Swanepoel behind, and Grant Stewart added 19 before he too was caught by Cullen off Waite. The lower order managed only token resistance, and Kent were bowled out well before the close of the session, which handed Worcestershire a long period to bat.

Hasan Mahmud Strikes Twice Before Lategan and Hose Steady Innings
Worcestershire’s reply began smoothly, with openers Jake Libby and Rehaan Edavalath taking the score to 26 without loss. Hasan Mahmud then turned the innings around in the space of two balls, bowling Libby for 18 and trapping Edavalath lbw for a golden duck at the end of the sixth over. That left Worcestershire at 26 for 2, but Daniel Lategan and Adam Hose steadied the innings with an unbroken stand of 54.
Lategan survived a close call from Hasan Mahmud when the bowler beat his bat, and both batters looked set when bad light ended play with 4.1 overs still remaining. Lategan finished the day unbeaten on 35, and Hose was not out on 24, which left Worcestershire well placed heading into day two.
Worcestershire currently sit fourth in the Division Two table, with Kent in second place, which made the result of this match significant for the promotion race. Kent will need early wickets on day two to prevent Worcestershire from building a substantial first-innings lead, while the visitors will look to their settled pair to extend their advantage further.
