Barcelona Set to Sign Joao Cancelo on Loan from Al-Hilal

Football player celebrating by cupping his hand to his ear

Barcelona is prepared to re-take Joao Cancelo on loan- yes, you heard that right! Joao Cancelo’s Barcelona loan saga has come to a melodramatic climax. Following weeks of discussions, several outlets say Barcelona has reached an agreement with Al Hilal to lend Cancelo to the club until the end of the 2025-26 season.

According to Idman.biz and transfer specialists, the Catalan club will pay around €4 million for the loan and cover a portion of the defender’s salary. Cancelo’s contract runs until June 2026 without an obligation to buy, meaning he returns to Saudi Arabia in the summer unless a new agreement is reached.

This article dives into why Barcelona is moving quickly in the transfer market, what the Barcelona transfer news around Cancelo means, and how the Joao Cancelo transfer could reshape the team’s defence.

Why Barcelona Wants Cancelo Back

Barcelona, currently leading La Liga under Hansi Flick, are facing defensive concerns at full back due to multiple injuries. Andreas Christensen is sidelined with a serious knee injury, while Ronald Araújo has taken a mental health break.

Flick has publicly acknowledged the need for a defensive reinforcement during the winter window, and Joao Cancelo ticks every box. Yes, the Portuguese defender is 31, but his previous spell in Catalonia left a mark.

During his loan from Manchester City in 2023‑24, he played 42 games, scored four goals and provided five assists. His dynamic dribbling, attacking runs and ability to switch flanks made him a fan favourite.

The coach wants a versatile full‑back who can play on both the right and left; Cancelo fits the bill. It helps that Cancelo is pushing for the move himself.

Multiple reports note that Inter Milan also reached a verbal agreement with Al‑Hilal, but Cancelo refused to consider any club other than Barcelona. Fabrizio Romano even reported that Cancelo was even willing to accept a less lucrative deal just to return, emphasising his passion for the club, “I only want Barça”, which turned the negotiations in the Catalans’ favour.

Barcelona’s ability to command attention in the transfer market remains undiminished despite financial constraints. After all, they recently turned down  Manchester City’s record‑busting £275 million bid for teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, highlighting both the value of its young talent and the club’s careful balancing act between big-money opportunities and immediate squad needs.

Loan Details and Financial Implications

Barcelona have had to tread carefully due to La Liga’s strict financial rules. By submitting Christensen’s medical report, the club can offload up to 80 % of his salary, creating space for a replacement.

That opened the door for a temporary deal that doesn’t break the bank. Transfer insiders indicate  the following key points of the loan:

Salary coverageBarça covers part of Cancelo’s wages – reports vary between €4–5 million.
Purchase optionNone; Cancelo returns to Al‑Hilal after June 2026 unless a future agreement is reached

Al‑Hilal initially wanted a permanent transfer or a loan with an obligation to buy, but Barcelona insisted on a short‑term deal. The Saudi side eventually relented, partly because Cancelo has struggled to settle.

Following his €30 million transfer out of Manchester City in 2024, he had a fair 2024-25 season with six assists and two goals; however, the current season has been marred by injuries and a row with manager Simone Inzaghi. Al-Hilal excluded him from their foreign-player list, and this meant he was to be transferred.

It is also worth noting that Al‑Hilal’s spending has been exceptionally bold. The Saudi Club has made several signings, including the high-profile Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez, which has underlined the financial muscle that allowed them to loan Cancelo while focusing their resources elsewhere.

Impact on Barcelona’s Squad

The Joao Cancelo deal is not a mere band-aid, but it transforms the structure of the team. Flick is now relying on natural left-back Gerard Martinian as centre-back, and Jules Kounde moves to right-back. According to Sports Illustrated, Martin’s move to centre‑back could become permanent while Cancelo covers both flanks.

Cancelo’s arrival could allow Koundé to move back into the centre, his preferred position. Flick will also have the flexibility to rotate full‑backs without sacrificing attacking thrust. The Portuguese is renowned for his ball control, passing range and tactical intelligence. He will bring:

  1. Versatility: He can play on either flank, sometimes even drifting into midfield.
  2. Creativity: His dribbling and attacking runs add width and unpredictability.
  3. Work rate: Known for high pressing and defensive diligence, he offers stability.
  4. Experience in big games: Cancelo has a Champions League pedigree and knows Barca’s system from his previous loan.

Drama Around the Negotiations

Transfer stories often resemble soap operas, and this was no different. Early reports suggested Al‑Hilal wanted Robert Lewandowski included in the deal – a demand Barcelona laughed off.

Inter, sensing an opportunity, reached a provisional agreement with the Saudi club, yet Cancelo’s desire to return to Camp Nou scuppered their plans. Hansi Flick’s public request for a defender added pressure on sporting director Deco to close the deal quickly.

There was the urgency of the impending January 31 deadline of the transfer. Barcelona was supposed to be registered by La Liga, which they had to approve and also make sure the deal met the financial fair play.

Similarly, the tweet by Fabrizio Romano, with its characteristic here we go, made fans all over the world very excited. Social media was full of memes and metaphors; some of the supporters even drew parallels between the coming of Cancelo as a prodigal son returning home, and others said that the right flank would be like Fort Knox.

FAQs

1. What is the status of the Joao Cancelo Barcelona loan?

Barcelona have agreed with Al-Hilal to loan Joao Cancelo up to June 2026 and pay approximately 4 million and co-pay his salary.

2. Is there an option to buy Cancelo permanently?

No. The loan is subject to termination at the expiry of the 2025-26 season and is not subject to any purchase option. Barcelona would be required to agree to a new contract in case they wish to retain him permanently.

3. Why did Cancelo prefer Barcelona over Inter Milan?

Inter had a verbal agreement with Al-Hilal, but Cancelo asked his representatives that he just wished to be back in Barcelona. It was a case of his attachment to the club and past success in the 2023-24 season.

4. How much will Barcelona pay in wages?

Barcelona is expected to cover part of Joao Cancelo’s salary during his loan from Al-Hilal. Reports suggest the club will pay around €4-5million of wages for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, with exact figures varying between outlets.

5. How does Cancelo’s arrival affect Barcelona’s defence?

Cancelo gives coach Flick more flexibility in defence. He can play as either a right or left full-back, allowing Jules Kounde to move into his preferred centre-back role while Gerard Martino can operate from centre-back without leaving the flanks uncovered.
