Why Cristiano Ronaldo Received His First Red Card for Portugal in 22 Years?

Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career stretches back to August 2003. Over more than two decades and hundreds of caps, he became the world football’s leading scorer without ever being sent off for his national team.

That record ended during the European qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In November 2025, Portugal’s captain received his first red card for the Seleção in a match at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

The incident instantly became headline news because of its rarity and because a potential suspension threatened to sideline him from the World Cup.

This article explains when and how the Cristiano Ronaldo red card occurred, why the referee upgraded his punishment, what FIFA’s disciplinary rules say about violent conduct and serious foul play, and whether the ban could impact Portugal’s World Cup opener.

When Did Cristiano Ronaldo Receive The Red Card For Portugal?

The sending‑off happened on 13 November 2025 during a UEFA Group F qualifier for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Portugal travelled to Dublin to face the Republic of Ireland, needing a win to secure automatic qualification.

Ireland stunned the visitors by taking a 2‑0 lead through a brace by Troy Parrott. Early in the second half, with Portugal pressing to reduce the deficit, Ronaldo became entangled with defender Dara O’Shea in the Irish penalty area.

Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg initially cautioned him with a yellow card for the challenge, but VAR recommended a review. After watching the replay on the pitch‑side monitor, Nyberg rescinded the caution and instead showed the 40‑year‑old a straight red card.

It was the first sending off of Ronaldo’s 22‑year international career and came in his 226th appearance, highlighting how unusual the episode was.

What Happened During The Incident Against Ireland?

In the 59th–61st minute (reports vary), Portugal won a free‑kick near the left flank. While anticipating Rúben Neves’ cross, Ronaldo and Dara O’Shea jostled for position in the crowded box.

The captain sharply turned and swung his right arm backward, catching O’Shea with his elbow. Nyberg initially brandished a yellow card, but the VAR review showed that the arm made clear contact with O’Shea’s head or upper back.

The referee upgraded the caution to a red card for violent conduct. Likewise, Ronaldo responded with sarcastic applause toward the crowd and exchanged words with the Irish bench.

As he walked off, he gave thumbsup gestures to jeering fans and later told Irish coach Heimir Hallgrimsson that he “complimented” him for putting pressure on the referee. Portugal, already trailing, could not recover with ten men and lost 2‑0.

Why Was Cristiano Ronaldo Shown A Red Card?

The Laws of the Game classify elbowing an opponent away from the ball as violent conduct, an offence more serious than serious foul play. Moreover, Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg oversaw the match.

In the 59th minute he initially showed a yellow card after Cristiano Ronaldo caught Republic of Ireland defender Dara O’Shea with a trailing elbow. VAR official Pol van Boekel then recommended a review, and replays showed the Portugal captain’s elbow making contact with O’Shea while the ball was not in play.

After watching the footage, Nyberg upgraded the booking to a straight red card for violent conduct. Likewise, under FIFA’s Laws of the Game and the Disciplinary Code, elbowing an opponent away from the ball is classified as violent conduct; Article 14(i) mandates a three‑match suspension for “assault, including elbowing, punching, kicking, biting, spitting or hitting an opponent.”

Many fans questioned Ronaldo’s intent. Portugal coach Roberto Martínez argued that O’Shea had been grabbing and pulling Ronaldo for almost an hour and that the replay magnified a movement made while trying to shake off his marker; he described the decision as harsh but accepted it.

Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson countered that Ronaldo had momentarily “lost his head,” calling the elbow a bit of “silliness” provoked by a febrile atmosphere. In addition, Neutral commentators pointed out that, regardless of intention, raising an arm and making contact with an opponent’s head meets FIFA’s definition of violent conduct, leaving referees little discretion.

Nyberg’s decision followed this logic and, although controversial among fans, was in line with the governing body’s rules.

What Do FIFA Rules Say About Red Cards And World Cup Bans?

Offence (FIFA Disciplinary Code 2023)Minimum banExample
Serious foul playAt least 2 matchesExcessive force in a tackle while challenging for the ball
Violent conductAt least 3 matchesElbowing, punching or kicking an opponent away from play
Assault (including elbowing)3 matches or an appropriate periodElbowing, punching or spitting at an opponent or person other than a match official

FIFA’s Disciplinary Code states that a player sent off must serve a mandatory one‑match suspension. Additional matches are imposed depending on the category of offence.

Serious foul play (including dangerous tackles) must entail at least two matches; violent conduct must entail at least three matches; and assault, specifically including elbowing, must entail three or more matches or a specified time. Notably, competitive matches are only taken into consideration as a ban.

Article 14-3 points out that the suspension is only considered to be served when the team actually plays a match, so that a friendly match or an exhibition match does not count towards the suspension.

The code can provide that portions of a suspension be suspended upon probation in cases where the disciplinary committee deems that there are mitigating circumstances.

Could Cristiano Ronaldo miss Portugal’s FIFA World Cup opener?

Initially, Ronaldo’s sending‑off triggered speculation that he might miss the opening match of his sixth World Cup. After the red card, he served the automatic one‑game ban when Portugal routed Armenia 9‑1 to seal qualification. In his career, this might be among the worst achievements ever.

According to FIFA, a three-match ban is imposed on violent behavior, which would otherwise carry over into the World Cup since friendlies before the World Cup are not counted. However, FIFA made its disciplinary verdict on 25 November 2025.

The body imposed a three‑match suspension but deferred two matches for a one‑year probation period, judging the act as “violent conduct or serious foul play”. As a result, Ronaldo’s ban was considered fulfilled with the single qualifying match he missed, and he will be eligible for Portugal’s first game at the 2026 World Cup.

The decision came with a warning: if Ronaldo commits a similar offence within the probation period, the two deferred matches will be reactivated

The expanded 48‑team format in 2026 also introduces new faces. Four nations:  Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan, qualified through their regional confederations to make their World Cup debuts. They join traditional heavyweights and returning qualifiers in the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

FIFA’s decision carries a caveat: if Ronaldo commits a similar offence within the probation period, the two deferred matches will be reactivated. However, barring any further incidents, Portugal’s captain is free to lead his country in the World Cup opener.

FAQs

1. Has Cristiano Ronaldo ever been sent off for Portugal before?

No. The red card against Ireland in November 2025 was Cristiano Ronaldo’s first sending off for Portugal after 22 years of international service. He had previously been sent off 13 times at club level.

2. How many red cards has Cristiano Ronaldo received in his entire career?

The dismissal in Dublin was his 14th overall red card. Cristiano Ronaldo had 13 red cards with clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al Nassr and none with Portugal until the Ireland match.

3. What is the difference between violent conduct and serious foul play in FIFA’s rules?

Serious foul play occurs when a player uses excessive force during a challenge for the ball and carries a minimum two‑match ban. Violent conduct refers to deliberate aggression without contesting the ball, such as elbowing, punching or kicking, and requires at least three matches. The code also lists assault, including elbowing or spitting, which carries three matches or more.

4. Does a suspension carry over into friendly matches?

No. The FIFA Disciplinary Code specifies that only competitive matches count toward serving a suspension and that “only those actually played by the respective team count towards execution of the suspension”. Exhibition games cannot be used to reduce a ban.

5. How did Portugal perform in the match after Ronaldo’s red card?

Portugal were already trailing 2‑0 after Troy Parrott’s two first‑half goals and, despite dominating possession, they could not break down Ireland’s defence with ten men. The match ended 2‑0, handing Portugal their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.
