Women’s football team celebrating their victory on the field

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has declared a reward of USD 25,000 (approximately INR 21.99 lakh) for the India U-17 women’s national team following their remarkable achievement of AFC Asian Cup qualification for the first time in history.. The Young Tigresses went undefeated, playing in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, coming out on top in both games against hosts Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan, both by a score of 2-1, winning the group in the end with six points.

This is a historic moment for women’s football in India. The last time India qualified for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup was 2005, but that edition did not require qualifying matches. Therefore, India will be competing in the AFC Asian Cup for the first time off the back of qualifying matches, starting first for Asia and with it representing the first-ever qualification achieved through competitive play, which signifies the growth of Indian football at school and youth competitions.

Perfect Qualification Campaign in Bishkek

India’s U-17 team showed great determination and skill during the qualifiers. Their two 2-1 wins over the Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan were sufficient for them to finish first in Group G and qualify for the AFC Asian Cup, in their inaugural event in this age group.

The Young Tigresses’ performances illustrated their tactical discipline and composure that came from the hard work and planning provided by the AIFF. They didn’t just succeed based on talent; their success was attributed to consistent preparation and competitive experience against older players in domestic competitions.

AIFF’s Strategic Reward

The AIFF has officially announced a cash reward of USD 25,000 in recognition of the team’s remarkable achievement, ensuring historic AFC Asian Cup qualification.. In a media release, the federation said, “The AIFF is delighted to announce this reward for the India U-17 women’s national team in recognition of their remarkable performance that has seen them qualify for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup for the first time in history.”

This reward is a testament to the AIFF’s commitment to promoting women’s football and recognizing the tremendous hard work of young people who have made the nation proud through their historic qualification for the AFC Asian Cup.

Building Talent Through Exposure

The All India Football Federation attributed the team’s success to longstanding planning and the exposure created through the domestic and international competitions in which players were involved. Several members of the U-17 team previously played as the Indian Arrows Women Juniors in the Indian Women’s League 2 against much older senior players.

This proved to be crucial match practice, and it helped to improve players’ tactical understanding, composure under pressure, and decision-making as they went through the qualifiers. It was evident that the level of exposure these players had while at the competitive match level was key to India’s successful AFC Asian Cup qualification.

Grassroots Initiatives and ASMITA Leagues

The ASMITA Women’s Football Leagues are one of the most useful programs introduced by AIFF, along with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), to improve the grassroots and youth football system, and 155 leagues of the programme will be rolled out with an age group of U13, U15, and U17 in India between 2023 and 2025.

It has been an effective identification and development pipeline, and 6,305 players will be part of the league in the 2023-24 season, and 8,658 players in the 2024-25 season. The growth is taking place, and last month saw the commencement of the 2025-26 season. The U13 ASMITA Leagues have an estimated 8,000 players playing in the season, representing about 400 teams across 26 states.

Such grassroots initiatives as ASMITA have directly influenced India’s ability to accomplish one of their aims of being in the AFC Asian Cup, gaining entry, as they have created more competitive and developmental avenues in which the youthful players can enter.

Significance of the AFC Asian Cup Qualification

Securing a spot in the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup is another exceptional achievement for Indian football. In the 2026 tournament, 12 teams representing the Asia Football Confederation will compete, and the top four finishers will qualify for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup later that year in Morocco.

India’s successful AFC Asian Cup qualification demonstrates the progress of women’s football forward and the effectiveness of the youth development, plans, and programmes implemented by the AIFF. Additionally, the experience of competing at the highest level will provide young athletes with the opportunity to develop their identity and have the experience of competing, and being in international competition.

Amit Mishra’s Take

The fact that the Indian U-17 women’s national team qualified to play the AFC Asian Cup can only be termed historic, which is a true reflection of the efforts and tactical training of the team, the AIFF itself, and the strategic investment it has made in forming the youth. The USD 25,000 prize does not just indicate that their achievement was appreciated, but also signifies that the federation is keen to promote football among women in India.

With the team gearing up for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, India’s AFC Asian Cup qualification stands as a benchmark for progress in women’s football — a testament to how structured youth development and grassroots initiatives can deliver real results.

Combined with the infrastructural backing and participation via schemes such as the ASMITA Leagues and the route to competition, Indian women’s football will only be more successful, and the commencement of future qualifying drives will only recap the success.
