South America Proposes a 64-Team FIFA 2030

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is shaping up to be one of the most important tournaments in football history. With six host countries from three continents and a historic return to Uruguay—the origin of the first World Cup in 1930, this edition already carries tremendous weight.

Now, CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body, has officially proposed expanding the competition from 48 to 64 teams to make the World Cup’s 100-year celebration even bigger.

Why CONMEBOL Wants a 64-Team Format for the 2030 World Cup?

CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez presented the 64-team proposal at the 80th Ordinary Congress. He emphasised that a once-in-a-century event requires an equally gigantic setting.

“We are convinced that the centenary celebration will be unique because 100 years are only celebrated once,” he said during the event.

Uruguayan Football Federation president Ignacio Alonso first proposed the concept during a FIFA Council meeting in March. Domínguez’s remarks signalled a significant shift in worldwide football operations.

The expansion would provide each CONMEBOL member to all ten South American nations a reasonable chance of qualifying. Venezuela, the region’s only country that has yet to play in the World Cup, would most likely earn its first chance.

Domínguez stated, “This will allow all countries to have the opportunity to experience the world and so nobody on the planet is left out of the party.”

If FIFA adopts this change, the tournament will expand from 64 to 128 matches, double the match count from 1998 to 2022.

Global Reactions to the 64-Team World Cup Proposal

FIFA acknowledged the proposal and issued a statement saying it had a “duty to analyse any proposal from one of its Council members.” President Gianni Infantino, who attended the CONMEBOL Congress, described the 2030 edition as an “exceptional milestone,” but did not confirm any stance on the expansion.

However, not everyone feels the same way. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin openly criticized the plan. “This proposal was maybe even more surprising for me than you. I think it is a bad idea,” he said at a press conference. Čeferin believes the expansion could water down the quality of play and disrupt the balance of competitive football across regions.

Additionally, environmental groups like Fossil Free Football, too, raised strong concerns. They labeled the idea of holding a World Cup across three continents as a “climate nightmare,” pointing to the carbon emissions tied to extensive travel for teams and fans.

Furthermore, critics also argue that this kind of expansion will hurt the value of World Cup qualifiers, especially in regions like South America where qualification is typically fierce and competitive. A 64-team format could automatically guarantee entry for several federations, making the qualifiers less meaningful.

What to Expect from the 2030 FIFA World Cup?

Even without expansion, the 2030 World Cup is currently the most geographically varied in history. The majority of the matches will take place in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. But to honor the tournament’s centenary, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will host the opening fixtures. Uruguay, the host and winner of the first World Cup in 1930, will stage one symbolic match.

Interestingly, the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada will be the first one to feature 48 teams. That expansion was approved back in 2017. It has already drawn criticism for devaluing the group stage, where even third-place teams in each group could still advance to the knockout rounds.

The football world is now divided, with a 64-team plan proposed for 2030. Supporters describe it as a huge step towards inclusivity and global representation, whereas critics warn that rapid expansion could risk the tournament’s prestige and competitiveness.
