FIFA, the football governing organization, has approved a plan to expand the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting in 2031. This decision is a major step toward growing women’s football around the world. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the change is not just about adding 16 more teams, but about improving the entire women’s game.

The aim is to help more countries benefit from the tournament and build stronger football systems. This expansion will make the competition bigger, bring in new talent, and make the sport more accessible all around the globe.

New Format and Global Impact on Women’s Football

The Women’s World Cup will adopt a new 12-group format, increasing the number of matches from 64 to 104; similar to the 2026 Men’s World Cup. The tournament will also be extended by one week, giving fans more games to enjoy.  FIFA President Gianni Infantino said, “This decision ensures we are maintaining the momentum in terms of growing women’s football globally.”

By allowing more teams to compete, the World Cup will help football grow around the world. Countries that may not have strong women’s football teams will now have a chance to develop and show their talent. This expansion is part of FIFA’s long-term plan to grow the women’s game and improve the quality of play, as seen in the 2023 World Cup, where teams from all confederations made important progress.

Host Cities and Concerns About One-Sided Matches

The 2031 Women’s World Cup will be held in the United States, a country with a strong history in women’s football. The US has hosted the tournament before in 1999 and 2003 and is set to host it again for the third time. There are no other competing bids, so the US is likely to be the only host, although the final approval is still pending. The UK is the only bidder for the 2035 World Cup, and they are also preparing and planning for the tournament.

One concern about expanding the Women’s World Cup to 48 teams is that there may be one-sided matches, especially in the early rounds. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino pointed out, “The 2023 World Cup showed the gap between the top teams and others is getting smaller.”

“Teams from all parts of the world won matches, and more teams reached the knockout stages than ever before,” he added. The expanded tournament is expected to stay competitive and provide exciting matches, even if some games seem uneven at the start.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Women’s World Cup Competitions

The expansion to 48 teams for the 2031 Women’s World Cup marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the sport. The World Cup will serve to fuel progress in women’s football, both on and off the pitch, as FIFA continues to focus on this area.  U.S. Soccer and other worldwide football organisations see the expansion as a method to boost fan involvement, strengthen supporter bases, and expand the sport’s financial potential.

The following initiatives will focus on ensuring that the women’s game is supported at all levels. FIFPRO, the international players’ organisation, has emphasised the importance of improving working conditions and promoting player development as part of this expansion. As more countries participate, there is an increased duty to keep the game fair and foster consistent growth in women’s football. This decision will pave the way for more entertaining, competitive, and inclusive World Cups in the future, resulting in a promising future for women’s football globally.
