In a move of linking football and world peace, Federation Internationale de Football Association has announced a new award, the FIFA Peace Prize. The peace award is set to make its debut during the World Cup draw on December 5 in Washington, D.C.
The move aims to bring into focus football’s continuing power in uniting people across borders and cultures. FIFA President Gianni Infantino with Donald Trump might also have some involvement with the unveiling of the award.
FIFA Unveils New FIFA Peace Prize
The FIFA Peace Prize is presented to celebrate individuals and organizations using football, with an aim to bring peace, unity, and understanding in an increasingly divided world.
According to the head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, “it will recognize exceptional actions for peace and highlight football, or soccer, as a force for good.”
Infantino announced his plan to the America Business Forum in Miami just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the same forum. However, Infantino would not confirm whether Trump would be the first winner, saying only, “On the 5th of December, you will see.”
Why Does the Peace Prize Matters?
Infantino argued that the prize reflects football’s “moral responsibility to unite people” and to give recognition to those “who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace.”
Now onwards, FIFA Peace Prize will be awarded every year “on behalf of fans from all over the world.” As a symbolic decision, the announcement of this award on the day of the World Cup draw is a global event joined by millions and representatives of nations from every corner of the world.

Infantino added that football cannot solve conflicts alone, but can “carry a message of peace” and “invest in happiness.” The award forms part of his wider bid to establish FIFA as a leader in global unity through sport.

Trump Connection Raises Eyebrows
Attention to this new effort has raised a few eyebrows given the close relationship of Infantino and Donald Trump. The US President was passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, and has been seeking international recognition for his work on peace.
Infantino has referred to Trump as a “close friend” and has commended his assistance with preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will host with Canada and Mexico.
Adding to the ties, FIFA recently appointed Ivanka Trump to the board of a $100 million education project funded partly by 2026 World Cup ticket sales.
