Irish Body to Vote For Israel Ban Citing Violations | UEFA New World Cup & Euro Qualifying Plans

Irish body votes for Israel ban

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) voted in favor of urging UEFA to ban Israel from European competitions, primarily with respect to the violations of football regulations and human rights.

This comes at a time when UEFA is set to announce new team qualification plans for competitions on the world’s stage. Irish body votes for Israel ban in regards to a national football federation member questioning a member’s eligibility to participate in UEFA.

FAI Motion Passes With Clear Majority

The FAI revealed that delegates meeting in Dublin strongly supported a motion by Bohemians FC. The motion requests that the FAI ask UEFA’s Executive Committee to investigate the Israel Football Association (IFA) based on two potential infractions.

  • First allegation: Israeli clubs playing in the occupied Palestinian territories without the permission of the Palestinian Football Association.
  • Second charge: IFA has failed to apply UEFA’s anti-racism rules.

In its statement, the FAI also called on UEFA to develop clear procedures for suspending or expelling national associations, ensuring fair treatment. Thus, based on these allegations, the Irish body votes for Israel ban.

UEFA Reviews Motion After Irish Body Votes for Israel Ban

Some sources claim UEFA received a letter from Dublin, but nothing formal yet. Officials are expected to assess the ban motion during the next Executive Committee meeting on December 3 in Nyon, Switzerland.

If UEFA accepts the proposal, all national and club teams from Israel could potentially be barred from competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League, and European Championship qualifiers. FIFA, which regulates World Cup qualifying, would need to respond independently.

Furthermore, the Israeli Football Association dismissed the motion, calling it “politically motivated” and insisting that sport should not be drawn into geopolitical issues.

The Irish body votes for Israel ban comes amid heightened criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza across Europe. Ireland has been among the most vocal governments within the European Union.

Observers have pointed out that UEFA faced a similar disciplinary precedent when it suspended all Russian teams in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Israel finishes its World Cup qualifying journey on November 16 against Moldova. The team currently sits third in its group and cannot qualify for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This situation draws attention to whether UEFA will apply the same level of scrutiny in this case as it did with Russia’s exclusion.

UEFA Developing New Qualification Format

While UEFA evaluates Irish body votes for Israel ban motion, it is simultaneously advancing new UEFA team qualification plans for the next European Championship and World Cup cycles. The initiative aims to enhance competitiveness and viewer engagement in national-team football, while also reducing one-sided fixtures.

President Aleksander Čeferin, speaking at the Football Business Forum in Milan, reiterated that UEFA will not adopt a Champions League-style league system for qualifiers.

“There are two systems we are exploring, but we will not use a Champions League format,” said Čeferin. “We aim to balance fairness with excitement, enabling smaller nations to qualify while maintaining high standards.”

Amit Mishra’s Take

I think Ireland’s call for Israel to be withdrawn from UEFA is an obvious sign of the growing intersection of sport and geopolitics.

It is a challenge to the governing bodies of football to demonstrate that they value fairness, ethics, and inclusivity whilst maintaining the game as a single unit. With UEFA preparing to implement its new team qualification plans. There is a potential to redefine the balance between political accountability and athletic fairness in contemporary European football.
