Not just from fans, the FIFA Club World Cup is drawing criticism from some of football’s legends. When big personalities like Jurgen Klopp speak, the football world listens. The German football executive has just called the Club World Cup a ticking time bomb, and warns Club World Cup will wreck the players and the season.
According to Daily Mail, Klopp has criticised the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, calling it “the worst idea ever in football.”

This year’s FIFA Club World Cup introduced 32 teams with 63 games. As of today, the group stage of the tournaments has concluded with 48 matches.
Not a surprise though, the event hosted in the United States has drawn plenty of criticism in the build-up for numerous matches and stadiums that are out of town and lacking in football fandom.
Amid the criticisms, Jurgen Klopp did not just hold back. He has often raised his voice for player workload and fixture congestion.
In an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Klopp expressed his disappointment with the expanded format and athlete development.
He said, “It’s all about the game and not the surrounding events – and that’s why the Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football in this regard.”

Klopp Warns of Player Burnout, Slams FIFA’s Scheduling Overload
He further slammed businesspeople who heavily invested in this tournament, “People who have never had or do not have anything to do with day-to-day business anymore are coming up with something. There is insane money for participating, but it’s also not for every club.”
Also, he addressed how players will be exhausted physically and mentally with back-to-back big tournaments. “Last year it was the Copa [America] and the European Championship, this year it’s the Club World Cup, and next year the World Cup. That means no real recovery for the players involved, neither physically nor mentally.”
Klopp remembered how Manchester City midfielder Rodri disclosed how players were close to going on strike due to an increase in games.
Moreover, Fifpro, the union for global football players and top European leagues, also came up with legal action against FIFA for its increased match schedule calling it an abuse of dominance.
Klopp concluded the interview with a heartfelt concern for player welfare. He openly warned officials of potential injuries and exhaustion caused by an overloaded match schedule. And also he emphasized that without proper rest, athletes will not be able to deliver their best, ultimately diminishing the value of athletes, clubs, and the events themselves.
