Real Madrid Pushes for Biennial Club World Cup to Boost Revenue

Real Madrid has taken a strong step outside of games, asking FIFA to hold the Club World Cup every two years. Even though they didn’t do well in the recent event in the U.S., the Spanish team sees a chance to change club football around the world.

With lots of ticket sales and the big renovation of the Bernabéu coming up, Florentino Pérez wants to use the tournament to make money. FIFA is careful but ready to grow, and places that might host in 2029 are Brazil, Qatar, Spain, and Morocco.

[REPORT] Real Madrid Wants Club World Cup Every Two Years

Real Madrid, always wanting more than trophies, has asked FIFA to make the Club World Cup happen every two years. The idea was shared during the recent tournament in the United States, where Xabi Alonso’s team lost in the semifinals after a 4–0 defeat by PSG.

But the numbers showed something else—Real Madrid sold 25% of all the tickets for the tournament. Yes, a lot of fans came just to watch Los Blancos play. Why the hurry?  Easy.

The change of Santiago Bernabéu into a modern stronghold has cost the club a huge €1.2 billion. President Florentino Pérez is looking for new ways to make money to help with the investment.

More Club World Cups mean more people can see them, more TV rights, and more money and power. The idea is bold but has a good reason behind it.

[UPDATE] 2029 Edition: What We Know So Far

FIFA, for now, plans to stage the Club World Cup every four years. The next edition is slated for 2029, but no venue has been confirmed yet.

Brazil has thrown its hat in the ring, while Qatar—still basking in its World Cup legacy—remains in the conversation. Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, co-hosts of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, are natural contenders, though Portugal has shown no real interest yet.

Interestingly, FIFA is also considering increasing the number of participating teams from 32 to 48, potentially making room for more regional champions and commercial appeal. But a biennial format? That’s still up in the air.

[TRENDING] Who’s In for 2029? The Confirmed Clubs So Far

Let’s get straight to it—who is already qualified? Even though Chelsea won the first Club World Cup, they might not get a place. PSG, the current UEFA Champions League winner and the team that beat Real in the semifinals, is the only European team confirmed so far.

These are the four clubs that are set. Here are the four clubs locked in:

ClubConfederationQualification Path
PSGUEFAChampions League Winner 2024/25
Al-AhliAFCAsian Champions League Winner
Cruz AzulCONCACAFCONCACAF Champions Cup Winner
Pyramids FCCAFCAF Champions League Winner

More clubs will qualify through their continental tournaments in the coming seasons.

[WHAT’S HAPPENING] Real’s Game Plan Beyond the Pitch

Even though they didn’t play well on the pitch in the U.S., Real Madrid’s presence in the crowd was amazing. The club’s fans showed up in large numbers, making them the clear top team in sales for the tournament.

The report said that Real could have a big impact on FIFA’s decisions because of their worldwide presence and strong business appeal. Pérez is working hard to keep money steady while still aiming high in sports.

This plan that comes every two years is not just an idea—it’s something really important to do.

Amit Mishra’s Angle

I see Real Madrid’s plan as more than just about money; it’s a small change in who holds power in football around the world. If it works, it shows that clubs can lead the story, not just the governing bodies.

Will FIFA give in to the big European teams, or stick to its usual plan?
