Svensson Strike Sends Dortmund Into Club World Cup Last 16 With Win Over Ulsan

Borussia Dortmund clinched their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup with a narrow but decisive 1-0 win over South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai, thanks to a first-half strike by Daniel Svensson.

In a match dominated by the German side, Dortmund registered 28 shots, 11 on target, and nearly 60% possession, yet failed to extend their lead due to a heroic performance from Ulsan goalkeeper Hyeon-Woo Jo. The victory now sets up Dortmund’s next clash against the Group E runner-up, with bigger tests looming in the knockout stages.

Svensson’s Strike Sends Dortmund Into Club World Cup Knockouts

Daniel Svensson scored a goal in the 36th minute, which was just enough to help Borussia Dortmund win 1-0 against Ulsan Hyundai in their last group match of the FIFA Club World Cup. It wasn’t nice, but it was good enough.

The German team, even with many missed chances, finished first in Group F and moved on to the Round of 16, where tougher challenges are ahead.

Yes, you heard that right—despite 28 shots and 58 touches in the opposition box, Dortmund’s only joy came from Svensson’s well-timed finish.

Ulsan’s resistance was led by the heroic Hyeon-Woo Jo, whose 10 saves, including point-blank efforts from Guirassy and Gross, kept the scoreline respectable.

[TRENDING] BVB’s Firepower Misfires But Dominance Stays Intact

According to reports, Dortmund opened with aggression. Jobe Bellingham, Karim Adeyemi, and Felix Nmecha formed a fluid triangle that cut through Ulsan’s backline like hot steel through ice.

The reward came when Svensson pounced from close range—his instinct as sharp as a fox in the box. But from then on, it was a shooting gallery.

Dortmund recorded 28 shots (11 on target) yet failed to breach Jo again. Guirassy’s thundering header? Parried. Gross’s curling strike? Tipped wide. Even Duranville’s late effort couldn’t find daylight. The South Korean keeper resembled a brick wall painted in reflex.

Meanwhile, Ulsan’s attack barely sparked. With just 3 shots and 9 box touches, their best chance came via Lee Jin-hyun, only to be denied by Kobel’s outstretched glove.

Defensive Resolve and Tactical Stats You Can’t Ignore

The report also stated that Dortmund were as commanding on the ball as a conductor with a baton. With 515 passes and 695 touches, they controlled the tempo from whistle to whistle.

In contrast, Ulsan hung on defensively, making 16 clearances and winning 15 tackles to stay alive.

Group F Wrap + Reyna’s Return in Focus

Dortmund’s seven points put them two clear of Fluminense, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Mamelodi Sundowns. The South African champions finished third, with Ulsan bottoming out without a point.

Meanwhile, American international Giovanni Reyna made his tournament debut, subbing in at the 78th minute. FIFA’s club-over-country rule meant he missed the Gold Cup, but his presence was a boost to Dortmund’s midfield depth.

Amit Mishra’s Final Word

As a writer and die-hard football journalist and enthusiast, this wasn’t a masterclass in finishing—it was a tactical grind with a lone spark from Svensson.

Dortmund seemed like a lion looking at itself in a mirror—strong in purpose, but not able to change the score. The middle of the field was full of energy, the pressure was good, but what about the final result? Not a good use of things.

Good things:

  • Full control and smooth teamwork
  • Strong defence and no goals allowed
  • Reyna coming back makes things better

Bad things:

  • Finishing was not exact
  • Too much trust in one person’s smarts
  • Missed a chance to build a goal difference

If Dortmund aim to lift this trophy, their shooting boots need tightening. Because the deeper they go, the slimmer the margins.
