World Cup 2026 Ticket Demand Hits 150 Million Requests, FIFA President Says

Demand for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has surged to unprecedented levels, with more than 150 million ticket requests filed in just two weeks, according to FIFA.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced Monday that the tournament has drawn more than 150 million ticket requests since sales opened December 11, a figure that dwarfs the 17 million applications received for the entire 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking at the World Sports Summit in Dubai, Infantino defended ticket prices that have sparked international criticism, pointing to demand that exceeds available seats by roughly 30 times.

The numbers underline the scale of interest. Within 24 hours of the Random Selection Draw opening, FIFA said it logged 5 million requests. That total climbed to 20 million by mid-December before reaching 150 million by the end of the month, an average of roughly 10 million applications per day.

“We have six to seven million tickets on sale, and in two weeks we could have filled 300 years of World Cups,” Infantino said. “Without FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries. The revenues generated are going back to the game all over the world.”

The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19 across 16 venues in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It’s the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, expanding from the traditional 32-team format and adding 40 matches to the schedule.

Miami Match Leads Demand

Colombia’s clash with Portugal in Miami on June 27 has drawn the most interest so far, according to FIFA data. Florida’s Colombian population, estimated at 2 million, explains part of that surge. The match also features Cristiano Ronaldo in what’s likely his final World Cup appearance.

Other fixtures generating heavy traffic include Brazil versus Morocco in New York on June 13, Mexico against South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18, Ecuador facing Germany in New York on June 25, and Scotland against Brazil in Miami on June 24.

Scotland’s showing reflects genuine enthusiasm. The Scots haven’t qualified for a World Cup in 28 years, and their supporters are making their presence felt in the application numbers.

After the three host nations, Colombia ranks fourth in ticket requests despite not hosting any matches. England, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Scotland, Germany, Australia, France, and Panama round out the top requesting countries.

The main surprising element in the match between two great Messi vs Ronaldo as they have announced their last World Cup. Because of this, fans all over the world are getting more hyped for this World Cup.

Price Backlash Intensifies

The celebration of record demand comes against a backdrop of sustained criticism over pricing. Football Supporters Europe called the costs “extortionate” and accused FIFA of potentially excluding ordinary fans from the event.

Group stage tickets start at $140, more than double the $69 base price for Qatar 2022. The cheapest seat for the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey costs $4185 (around £3,300), compared with $605 (about £480) in Qatar. Premium seats for the final are priced as high as $8,680.

Those official prices look modest compared to what’s appeared on unauthorized resale platforms, where some listings have exceeded $10,000. FIFA’s requirement for verified credit cards aims to prevent automated purchasing and subsequent scalping, though enforcement remains uncertain.

Following the outcry, FIFA introduced a $60 “supporter entry tier” available for all 104 matches, including the final. But there’s a catch: these tickets won’t go through FIFA’s public sales system.

Instead, national football federations will control distribution. Each country decides its own criteria for who qualifies. Some federations may prioritize supporters with documented travel history to away matches. Others might weigh official merchandise purchases or supporter club membership.

Britain’s government weighed in last week, calling the $60 tier “welcome but insufficient.” England’s Football Association expects to receive fewer than 5,000 tickets in this category to distribute among an estimated 2 million eligible fans.

The federation allocation system has raised questions about fairness and transparency. Different countries will inevitably apply different standards, creating an uneven playing field for supporters trying to attend the same tournament.

While the prices have been increased, the prize pool for the game has also been increased by 50% which also adds a bit of excitement among the players.

Application Window Closes Soon

The current sales phase runs through January 13 at 11 AM Eastern Time. Applicants submit requests for specific matches and price categories, subject to a household limit of six tickets per game. FIFA said the timing of applications within this window doesn’t affect chances; all entries go into a randomized draw.

Results will be notified in late January. Successful applicants will be charged automatically to the credit card on file.

MetLife Stadium hosts the July 19 final. SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles stages the opening match on June 12, when the United States faces Paraguay. The tournament marks the first World Cup in North America since 1994 and the first ever split across three countries.

FIFA projects 5.5 million people will attend matches across the 39-day event, surpassing the 3.4 million who attended in Qatar. The organization has sold 44 million World Cup tickets total since the tournament began in 1930.

The 782% jump in demand from Qatar to this edition reflects several factors: the return to North America after 32 years, the expanded team format bringing more countries into contention, and the novelty of matches spread across three nations with different soccer cultures and fan bases.

Whether FIFA adjusts its approach before future sales windows remains unclear. For now, 150 million people are waiting to learn if they’ll get to see the world’s biggest sporting event in person.
