World Cup Final Replay Petition Nears 80,000 Signatures After Argentina’s Defeat

World Cup final replay petition

A petition demanding that FIFA replay the 2026 World Cup final has crossed 80,000 signatures, days after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time.

Argentine supporter Gisela Sánchez launched the campaign on Change.org, accusing Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić of favouring Spain during Sunday’s final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

The petition has continued gathering support even though the result has already been confirmed by FIFA.

Petition Alleges Referee Bias During Final

Sánchez’s petition describes Vinčić’s performance as corrupt and claims video evidence shows the official was influenced to determine the outcome of the match. The text argues that fans deserve a game decided by skill rather than officiating decisions, and it calls on FIFA to review the final with transparency before considering a replay.

The petition does not include independently verified proof beyond clips shared on social media, which organisers say support their claims of bias toward Spain. FIFA has not issued any response indicating that the result will be reconsidered.

Spain claimed their second men’s World Cup title through Ferran Torres, who scored in the 106th minute of extra time. Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated possession for most of the match and kept Argentina without a shot on target during normal time.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez made several saves to keep Argentina competitive before Torres eventually broke through. Argentina’s chances were further reduced after midfielder Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card in stoppage time, following an earlier booking for dissent.

His challenge on Pau Cubarsí left Lionel Scaloni’s team with ten men heading into extra time. Match statistics show Vinčić awarded 46 fouls in total, with Argentina committing 25 of them as the game grew increasingly physical.

Post-Match Clashes Trigger Separate FIFA Review

Scenes on the pitch turned tense immediately after the final whistle. Leandro Paredes was sent off following an altercation involving Eric García and Gavi, while Nahuel Molina was also involved in a confrontation with Spain captain Rodri.

FIFA has opened a separate disciplinary review into the incidents. Former England defender Gary Neville criticised Argentina’s conduct during ITV’s coverage, calling their recent behaviour on the pitch a disgrace while acknowledging their competitive spirit throughout the tournament.

Similar Campaigns Emerged Earlier in the Tournament

This is not the first replay petition to surface during the 2026 World Cup. French supporters started a similar campaign after Spain’s semi-final win over France, disputing a penalty decision that opened the scoring.

That petition reached more than 82,000 signatures but had no impact on the official result. Change.org has also hosted petitions opposing Argentina, including one calling for the team’s ban from future World Cups, which gathered more than 29 million signatures before closing.

Thousands of Argentinian fans welcomed the team home cheering on Scaloni’s side for making it to back-to-back World Cup finals, despite online arguments, even though they lost to a strong Spanish side. FIFA has not said the petition will affect the final outcome, and the trophy will stay with Spain.
