Can Amey Ranawade Finally Solve Kerala Blasters’ Right-Back Crisis in the Indian Football League?

Is Amey Ranawade the Right-Back

Kerala Blasters FC have fixed a big problem — the right-back spot — by bringing in former Mumbai City FC defender Amey Ranawade.

With new coach David Catala, the team quickly signed the 27-year-old, who hoped to help make the defense stronger after letting in many goals last season.

This five-year deal shows a strong commitment, and this signing might start a new era for defense in Kochi.

[REPORT] Ranawade Arrives: Catala’s First Big Statement

Yes, you heard that right — David Catala has kicked off his tenure at Kerala Blasters by signing a player he believes can anchor the club’s shaky right flank. After enduring a season riddled with defensive blunders — nine of which led directly to goals — the Blasters knew patchwork solutions wouldn’t cut it anymore.

Ranawade, fresh from back-to-back loan stints at Odisha FC, brings with him not just a solid fitness record but the kind of reliability that has been missing at the club.

He featured in 46 of a possible 49 matches in the last two ISL campaigns — a feat that stands tall compared to the revolving door of right-backs in Kochi.

 Who’s Out and Who’s In?

The right-back position has been a merry-go-round of inconsistency for two seasons. Sandeep Singh, Aibanbha Dohling, Prabir Das, Hormipam Ruivah — the list of short-lived experiments reads like a failed casting call. Injuries and inconsistency plagued them all.

Likewise, Ranawade’s signing is meant to be the full stop to that saga.

Here’s a look at the numbers that matter:

PlayerGames Played(Last 1-2 Season)AssistsChances CreatedPassing Accuracy (%)Duel Success (%)
Amey Ranawade22(2024-25 season)11681.4846.58
Sandeep Singh15-20 (2023-24 & 2024-25)010-1269.8552.23
Aibanbha Dohling10-15 (2023-24 & 2024-25)02-376.5550.79
Prabir Das10-14 (2023-24 & 2024-25)03-467.3357.45

Ranawade’s creativity and ball progression stand head and shoulders above the rest — literally doing double the work with half the fuss.

Style Meets Substance on the Right Flank

Ranawade is not just a dependable defender; he’s also a spark plug on the overlap. His attacking thrust adds a whole new layer to Catala’s tactics.

With 200 final third entries and 171 penalty area incursions, he’s a right-back who plays like a winger when needed. According to reports, Catala wants his full-backs to be comfortable toggling between deep defensive blocks and high-press systems.

In addition, Ranawade’s spatial intelligence and tactical maturity are a snug fit for this approach — a Swiss Army knife in a backline of blunt tools.

Can He Click with Korou Singh?

Now, let’s talk about chemistry. Korou Singh was really fast and showed a lot of style on the right side last season. If everything goes well, Korou’s straight runs and Ranawade’s teamwork might be the next big thing in Indian football.

Like a good team, Korou and Ranawade could move past defenders and quickly switch from defense to attack. This partnership could change Kerala’s right side from a problem area to a great success story.

Final Thoughts from Amit Mishra’s Notebook

As a writer and big football fan, I think this move seems like a smart risk that shows who is really serious and who is not.

Good things:

  • Ranawade is strong and reliable, which is a significant improvement.
  • His attacking numbers are better than any recent right-back at the club.
  • Catala’s system could help him be his best self.

Bad points:

  • He didn’t help with any goals in the last ISL season — a possible warning sign.
  • Kerala’s changing team setup means it might take a while to get used to each other.

Even in a league where teams change a lot, this five-year deal shows a strong sense of stability. We will see if he becomes the strong defender that the Kerala Blasters have been hoping for.

But one thing is clear: the story about the right-back just got more interesting.
