Super Cup fixtures

The Super Cup matches left Indian football supporters on the edge of their seats, as Bengaluru FC bowed out, yet again, in the KO stage, going down on penalties to Punjab FC 4-5. Penalties once again continue to be a challenge for the Blues in Super Cup encounters, as they got beat last season at the quarter-final stage against Inter Kashi.

Gokulam Kerala FC ended their Super Cup campaign in style by winning against Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 at the GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim. Despite this win, the Malabarians finished third in Group C, therefore not progressing to the semi-finals.

Scoreboard – Super Cup Fixtures Key Results

Result / Outcome

Bengaluru FC vs Punjab FC
0-0 (Bengaluru lost 4-5 on penalties)
Gokulam Kerala FC vs Mohammedan Sporting
3-0 (Torras 28', Kynshi 56', Azorin 86')

In Super Cup fixtures a fine margin can separate victory from elimination in knockout football, with penalties playing a decisive role in Bengaluru’s fate.

Bengaluru FC vs Punjab FC – Match Report

In the Group C fixture FC Bengaluru met FC Punjab at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Shers entered the game with more aggression, but new forward Nsungusi Effiong was unable to take advantage of three promising opportunities on his first start. In the fourth minute, he headed a cross over the bar and soon after that, he failed to seize an opportunity from Dani Ramirez’s through ball, because keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was able to gain control of the situation.

FC Bengaluru’s first effort came in thirty minutes after Braian Sanchez intercepted Nikhil Prabhu and charged down the right flank. His hard-lifted cross deflected off Muhammed Uvais and almost went in before Muheet Shabir made a great save. Five minutes later, Chinglensana Singh headed a corner from Vinith Venkatesh over the bar.

Following the restart, Punjab maintained the advantage, creating several opportunities. Effiong managed to direct a header from Ramirez’s corner just in front of the hour mark – unfortunately, the ball drifted wide. Bengaluru countered an effort from Ryan Williams through ball to Ashique Kuruniyan along the left-hand side, who crossed low and just wide of the mark from Sunil Chhetri, who prior to this, was ruled out of the Indian squad.

FC Punjab’s coach, Panagiotis Dilmperis had the rest of the team zonally marking, except Sanchez, and compactly arranged in a mid-block. Bengaluru had previously shown far too much space in the final third, but they made important adjustments after the break and nullified the threat of Ramirez and Samir Zeljkovic in center mid-field.

In regulation time, it was 0-0 as Rahul Bheke very nearly secured a last-minute goal from a free kick; however, the match went to penalties with Shabir throwing Bengaluru FC’s sole miss from Ahmed, on Ryan Williams saved, whilst Vinit Rai tucked home the winning penalty and put the match-ending scoreline at 5-4 to FC Punjab. This was Bengaluru FC’s second consecutive season where they succumbed in the shootouts as part of the Super Cup fixtures.

FC Punjab will face East Bengal in the semi-final, while FC Goa will meet the top team from Group D.

Gokulam Kerala FC vs Mohammedan Sporting – Match Report

Earlier, Gokulam Kerala defeated Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 to conclude their Super Cup fixtures on a positive note. Albert Torras opened the scoring in the 28th minute after a deflected shot from Shighil fell in front of him. Samuel Kynshi doubled the lead in the 56th minute following a throw-in from Akshunna Tyagi, while Juan Carlos Rico Azorín wrapped up the victory in the 86th minute after a counter-attack finished by Alfred Moya.

Mohammedan Sporting started aggressively, with Ashley Alban Koli’s free-kick hitting the upright in the 10th minute, followed by Lalngaihsaka’s lobbed cross that went over the bar six minutes later. However, Gokulam Kerala gradually grew into the match, maintaining possession and creating clear-cut chances.

The Blues’ defence was tested when Gursmirat Singh’s header in the 81st minute was cleared off the line by Cap. Sajad Hussain Parray. Minutes later, a tired Mohammedan side conceded on the counter, allowing Azorín to score his first goal for the Malabarians.

Gokulam Kerala FC ended with a commanding victory, however, it wasn’t enough to overturn their position in Group C, leaving them eliminated despite strong performances in the Super Cup fixtures.

Group C – Standings & Qualification

  1. Punjab FC – Qualified
  2. Bengaluru FC – Eliminated
  3. Gokulam Kerala FC – Eliminated
  4. Mohammedan Sporting – Eliminated

Both Bengaluru and Punjab FC finished the group stage with equal points, requiring a shootout to determine the group topper. Even with the ultimate victory, Gokulam Kerala scooped position three, emphasizing the competitiveness in the Super Cup matches.

Tactical Insights

Bengaluru FC vs Punjab FC:

  • Bengaluru had turned to wing play and through balls but they were countered by the disciplined zonal marking by Punjab.
  • The death sentence turned out to be conclusive, which is a recurrent motif of Bengaluru C in the Super Cup matches.

Gokulam Kerala FC vs Mohammedan Sporting:

  • Gokulam was tactically mature, as he dominated the midfield and made use of counters.
  • The initial aggression of Mohammedan did not appear in the form of objectives and it was evidence of the defensive strength of Malabarians.

Player Highlights

  • Ryan Williams (Bengaluru): Important in open play but failed to score from the spot.
  • Vinit Rai (Punjab FC): Scored the penalty that allowed his team to progress to the semifinals.
  • Albert Torras, Samuel Kynshi, and Juan Carlos Rico Azorín (Gokulam Kerala): Contributed three goals in the final match to highlight their offensive capabilities.
  • Shabir (Punjab FC goalkeeper): Important saves in the shootout.

Implications for Clubs

  • Bengaluru FC: Will have to work on the vulnerability to penalties shootouts; major takeaways are the quality of the squad and the ability to be calm when under pressure.
  • Gokulam Kerala FC: Gokulam Kerala FC has to do better with positive attacking performances to be able to have more consistent performance through the group stage next year in the Super Cup fixtures.
  • Punjab FC: Discipline on the field and mental hardiness were rewarded, and a semifinal encounter took place with East Bengal.

Wrapping Up

The matches played as part of the Group C Super Cup were a close affair filled with drama, with Bengaluru being eliminated on penalties, Gokulam Kerala finishing third with a decisive win over Mohammedan Sporting, and Punjab FC advancing into the semi-finals. These matches highlight the competitive nature of India’s primary knockout competition and the importance of finishing the tie strong in every Super Cup match.

Final Scores:

  • Gokulam Kerala 3 (Torras 28’, Kynshi 56’, Azorin 86’) bt Mohammedan Sporting 0
  • Bengaluru 0 (4) lost to Punjab FC 0 (5) on penalties

Amit Mishra’s Take

Bengaluru suffered another blow in the Super Cup fixtures since they were beaten 4-5 in penalties by Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Ryan Williams misses a penalty kick to terminate the hope of Bengaluru, and Punjab proceeds to the semifinals.

In the morning, Gokulam Kerala FC completed the Super Cup fixtures campaign with a high-scoring 3-0 win over Mohammedan, with Albert Torras, Samuel Kynsh, and Juan Carlos Rico Azoroin scoring.

Even though Gokulam won the match, they ended up losing in third place in Group C; Whereas, Bengaluru experienced the same penalty misfortunes in the most recent dramatic episode of this season’s Super Cup fixtures.
