Patha Chakra vs Mohun Bagan U23

The Calcutta Football League group stage finished with an event that was felt in the small streets of Naihati. Mohun Bagan U23 won 5-2 against Patha Chakra at the Bankimanjali Stadium.

Karan Rai scored three goals, and Pasang Dorji Tamang and Piush Thakuri also scored. Even though they won strongly, the Mariners did not make it to the Super Six spots. Patha Chakra tried hard but ended up feeling let down.

Also, Mohun Bagan’s goals broke Patha Chakra’s spirit. Pasang Dorji Tamang’s first move was very quick and made the weaker team struggle to keep up.

David Molla’s penalty equaliser felt like a cool shower on a humid afternoon, but it only spurred Mohun Bagan to attack with greater intensity. Karan Rai’s hat-trick was the centrepiece; his aerial prowess, quick feet and predatory instincts mirrored a seasoned striker, belying his age.

Piush Thakuri’s strike on the stroke of half-time was the dagger that broke Patha Chakra’s spirit. Soumyajit Tarafdar’s late effort saved some pride for Patha Chakra but failed to alter the outcome.

Key Incidents & Turning Points

The meeting had many important times besides the goals. At 14 minutes, referee Simanta Kahar called for a penalty after a rough tackle on Patha Chakra player Sagun Soren.

David Molla kicked the penalty perfectly. But, Mohun Bagan answered right away. Tushar Biswakarma made a sliding tackle that stopped a fast break from Patha Chakra.

Yellow cards were shown to Patha Chakra’s Debasish Halder at 29 minutes and to Mohun Bagan’s Muhammed Bilal at 37 minutes for rough plays, according to the match log. Near the end of the game, another Patha Chakra player got a warning at 82 minutes.

Smart changes made a big difference. Mohun Bagan coach Deggie Cardozo brought in Aditya Adhikari early in the second half to add speed on the side. The change made Patha Chakra’s full-backs uneasy and opened up space for Rai to get his third goal.

The Patha Chakra team made two changes, but they came too late. No red cards were given, and the only time the referee checked with the assistant was before deciding on Molla’s penalty.

Performance Highlights

Mohun Bagan’s dominance stemmed from the dynamism of their young front line. Pasang Dorji Tamang scampered down the left like a deer in an open field, his directness giving the Mamoni Group side headaches.

Karan Rai deserved the man-of-the-match award; his hat-trick showcased a blend of timing and composure. Each finish was a work of artβ€”first a thumping header, then a cool one-on-one, and finally a poacher’s finish.

Piush Thakuri’s goal demonstrated technique; he bent his shot around a wall of defenders like a painter guiding a brush. In midfield, Nishar dictated tempo, switching play smoothly and clipping passes into channels.

Captain Shibam Munda marshalled the defence, making a last-ditch block that prevented Soumyajit Tarafdar from scoring earlier. Goalkeeper Deeprobhat Ghosh produced a stunning reflex save midway through the second half, tipping a curling free-kick over the bar, a moment that kept the margin at three goals and drew cheers from Mohun Bagan supporters.

For Patha Chakra, David Molla’s penalty conversion was confident, and Soumyajit Tarafdar’s persistence was rewarded with a late goal. Yet their midfield often looked like a ship without a rudder; they struggled to retain possession and were repeatedly carved open by Mohun Bagan’s crisp passing.

Keeper Sourav Samanta made several stops, including an acrobatic dive to deny Thumsol Tongsin, but he was frequently left exposed.

Post-Match Impact & Future Outlook

The result was very important for the Calcutta Premier Division. Mohun Bagan won, and now has 17 points from 10 games, putting them in fifth place in the group stage table.

Even though they had more goals than they let in, losing to Calcutta Customs earlier meant Deggie Cardozo’s team did not make it to the Super Six. Patha Chakra got 16 points from 11 games, finishing sixth in the standings. It was a sad end after they started off well. East Bengal had already secured a place in the Super Six, so this match was more about pride.

Mohun Bagan’s young players will focus on national youth competitions and the Durand Cup qualifiers soon. Cardozo will work on being steady and making the defense stronger after giving up 11 goals in the group stage.

For Patha Chakra, coming together will mean getting better at defense and helping talents like Tarafdar grow. In addition, their next game is a friendly match against Railway FC, giving them a chance to feel good again.

Amit Mishra’s Take

Watching Mohun Bagan win 5-2 made me think about why people say football is a game of small differences. Patha Chakra had a chance to push hard after Molla scored, but their setup fell apart like a house of cards under the strong attacks from the Mariners.

Karan Rai’s rise from being a young player to a game-changer shows how much Mohun Bagan depends on young talent. The result might not change the league table much, but it shows a bit of what the future of Kolkata football could be like, with local talent doing well.
