ISL 2025–26 Vincy Barretto’s Late Goal Seals 1–0 Win for Jamshedpur FC Over Punjab FC

Jamshedpur FC beat Punjab FC 1–0 in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Saturday, with substitute Vincy Barretto scoring a late deflected goal to give Jamshedpur their second consecutive home win of the season at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

The only goal arrived in the 78th minute. Barretto started the move by playing the ball wide to Sanan Mohammed, whose cross into the box was punched away by the Punjab goalkeeper. The rebound struck Barretto and trickled into the net.

It was Jamshedpur’s first and only goal of the evening, in which they dominated possession and territory but struggled to find a way through a well-organised Punjab defence for long stretches of the contest.

First Half: Jamshedpur Control Possession

Jamshedpur set the tone from the opening minutes with controlled possession and pushing Punjab back into their own half. Sanan Mohammed and Ritwik Das were both active on the flanks. They regularly found space and put the visiting defence under pressure with their movement and delivery.

The clearest opportunity of the first half came midway through the period when Pronay Halder got on the end of a corner and directed a header towards goal. However, the effort drifted wide of the post. It was a moment that summed up Jamshedpur’s first half — promising without being clinical.

Messi Bouli was a persistent presence in and around the Punjab penalty area. The Cameroonian forward caused problems with his hold-up play and ability to bring others into the game. In the 38th minute, Bouli brought a long ball under control inside the box and looked to create an opening, but the Punjab defence recovered quickly and cleared the danger before he could get a shot away.

Moments later, a low Bouli cross into the box was blocked and fell to Sanan Mohammed, who drove forward before going to ground under a challenge from a Punjab defender. The Jamshedpur players appealed loudly for a penalty, but the referee waved play on, and the protests came to nothing.

Despite their dominance in terms of possession and chances created, Jamshedpur could not find a way through before the interval. Punjab, offering little in attack, were nonetheless well-organised defensively and went into the break level.

Second Half: Coyle Turns to the Bench

The second half began in much the same way as the first had ended, with Jamshedpur carrying the ball forward and Punjab working to stay compact and deny space. The visitors showed little ambition going forward, but their defensive discipline continued to frustrate the home side.

Mohammed Talal provided one of the clearer chances of the second period, striking a powerful effort from wide in the 63rd minute that forced the Punjab goalkeeper into action. The shot was punched away, and Jamshedpur were left searching for another opening.

Jamshedpur head coach Owen Coyle moved to change the dynamic on the pitch by introducing Vincy Barretto and Rei Tachikawa from the bench. The pair were brought on to add energy and a different dimension to an attack that had created opportunities but failed to convert them. Barretto, in particular, made an immediate impression and was directly involved in the goal that followed shortly after his introduction.

The move started with Barretto picking up the ball in central midfield and releasing Mohammed down the right. Mohammed’s cross into the box was met by the Punjab goalkeeper, whose punch failed to fully clear the danger. The ball rebounded off Barretto and rolled into the net, sparking celebrations among the home supporters.

Punjab pushed men forward in the final minutes in search of an equaliser, but the Jamshedpur defence, organised and led by captain Steven Eze at the back, held firm without serious difficulty. Eze was composed throughout the second half and ensured the clean sheet remained intact.
