The ISL Under Fire: Can Indian Football Survive the Fallout?

ISL legal battle

Because of the Indian Super League (ISL), the Indian football scene has changed. Β  The league has provided Indian athletes with the financial security they have long deserved, as well as generated employment and drawn in foreign sportsmen. Ongoing ISL legal battles, however, have raised questions about the ISL’s continued existence.

An important dispute between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the league’s operator, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), is scheduled for a Supreme Court of India ruling. What implications does this have for Indian football? Let’s examine it more closely.

The Supreme Court’s Role in the ISL’s Future

The ISL legal battle is around a dispute over Indian football’s governance. The Supreme Court intervened in 2022 following years of problems with postponed elections and bad governance within ISL.

A Committee of Administrators (CoA) was established to supervise the federation’s activities after the AIFF Executive Committee was disbanded. As a result, FIFA temporarily suspended them. But after fresh elections were held, the ban was lifted.

Still, the legal troubles didn’t stop there. Now, the Supreme Court is looking at a new AIFF constitution, which will affect how the federation operates, how elections are conducted, and how voting rights are assigned on important matters.

As part of this, the court has ordered that no decision be made on renewing the MRA between the AIFF and FSDL, which governs the ISL, until the court issues a final verdict.

That decision is expected by mid-July 2025, but until then, the future of the ISL 2025-26 season remains uncertain. This legal uncertainty has put everyoneβ€”from players to fansβ€”on edge about what might happen next.

The Financial Impact: Why the ISL Matters?

The ISL isn’t just a sports league; it’s become the financial backbone of Indian football. FSDL invests over β‚Ή60 crore every year into the league, while the clubs have poured billions into building their teams, infrastructure, and fanbases. If the ISL were to be discontinued, all the club and league infrastructure and investment would go to waste. But the financial impact stretches beyond just the clubs and investors.

The ISL has created thousands of jobs across the country. Clubs like Odisha FC, Kerala Blasters, and Mumbai City FC, employ hundreds of people, from administrative staff to coaches to marketing teams. The whole ISL ecosystem supports thousands of jobs, many of which aren’t the high-profile, well-paid positions you see on TV β€” they’re the grassroots roles that keep everything running smoothly. Without the ISL, many of these jobs would disappear, impacting local communities in a big way.

Furthermore,Β  the ISL has given Indian players a level of financial stability that wasn’t available before. Players can now make up to β‚Ή1 crore a year, and many make even more. This is a significant change from the past, when Indian football players frequently had to work multiple jobs to finance their careers or battled to make ends meet. Players are now uncertain of their future in the sport as the ISL legal battle threatens to reverse these gains.

What’s at Risk: The Bigger Picture

In addition to the money and employment, the ISL legal battle poses a threat to Indian football’s expansion. A whole new generation of young football players has been inspired by the ISL, which has ignited a revolution in the sport nationwide.

A few years ago, it would have appeared inconceivable for kids from tiny towns and villages to dream of playing professional football. The ISL has given these kids role models and shown them that football can be a legitimate career. Without the league, that dream would feel a lot more distant.

Additionally, the league has driven investment into youth development and football infrastructure. To make sure the upcoming generation of football players gets the tools they need to succeed, clubs are constructing academies and upgrading training facilities. All of this advancement might be undone and Indian football would regress for years, if the ISL were to fail.
