Inter Drop Points While Milan, Juventus Battle to Stalemate

Inter Slip Up as Milan and Juventus Share 0-0 Draw

Sunday’s Serie A action delivered drama at both ends of the table. Inter Milan let a two-goal lead slip at Torino, while AC Milan and Juventus cancelled each other out in a goalless draw at San Siro. The results kept the title race ticking and left the Champions League battle wide open with four games to go.

Inter Let Two-Goal Lead Slip at Torino

Inter came into the weekend as heavy favorites to close in on a 21st league title. They looked to be doing just that in Turin, going two goals ahead through headed efforts from Marcus Thuram and Yann Bisseck after the hour mark.

Then it fell apart. Giovanni Simeone pulled one back in the 70th minute with a clever dinked finish over goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Nine minutes later, Nikola Vlasic stepped up and converted from the penalty spot to earn Torino a share of the points.

Inter coach Cristian Chivu was honest after the final whistle.

“You think everything is easy and that you have everything under control when you’re two goals ahead,” he said. “Then you concede because of a mistake while playing out from the back, and you get nervous.”

Despite the slip, Inter remain firmly in control at the top. They sit on 79 points, 10 clear of second-placed Napoli. A win over Parma at San Siro next weekend will be enough to hand them the Scudetto. Parma have nothing left to play for this season, which makes Inter strong favorites to wrap it up in front of their own fans.

Milan and Juventus Serve Up a Dull San Siro Draw

The evening fixture at San Siro was billed as one of the biggest matches of the Serie A calendar. It did not live up to that billing.

Milan and Juventus, who also drew 0-0 when they met in Turin back in October, produced another forgettable encounter. Both sides had moments without ever truly threatening to break the deadlock.

Khephren Thuram thought he had given Juventus the lead when he slid home Francisco Conceicao’s low cross midway through the first half, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Conceicao, lively throughout on the right wing, twice had shots saved by Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. At the other end, Alexis Saelemaekers struck the crossbar shortly after half-time. Substitute Dusan Vlahovic, seeking his first goal since November, fired across the goal in stoppage time only for Maignan to keep it out with his boot.

Off the pitch, Milan’s hardcore supporters used the occasion to protest rising ticket prices. Fans lit up their phones to display the figure “€139” — the price of a seat in the cheapest section — with a banner reading “for a fairer, working-class football.”

Champions League Race Still Far From Settled

The point apiece left Milan third on 67 points and Juventus fourth on 64. Como and Roma both won on Sunday, which means the sides directly below Juve sit just three points back.

Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti made no attempt to hide the tension.

“Roma and Como both won so we still have a few matches we need to win before we can say we deserve our place in that tournament,” he said, adding the battle for a top-four finish “will go down to the wire.”

With four rounds remaining, nothing is settled. Inter aside, every club in the top six still has work to do.
