Guided by Manolo Marquez, FC Goa gave a spirited performance but lost again, in the AFC Champions League Two, to Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia, by a margin of 2-1 at Margao at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Although they are trying hard, Goa has not scored even a single point in their three games in Group E.

Al-Nassr maintained their winning streak and played their third match in the AFC Champions League Two as winners. Angelo Damaceno and Haroune Camara were the providers of the goals of the Saudi club. Brison Fernandes penned a glimmer of hope to the home supporters with a goal in the 41st minute.

Match result:

FC Goa 1 (Brison 41’) lost to Al-Nassr 2 (Angelo 10’, Camara 27’)

Al-Nassr Starts Strong, Dominates Early Play: FC goa vs Al-Nassr

The game got off to a familiar start as Al-Nassr got on the front foot in their game against FC Goa. They enjoyed the majority of possession right from the kick-off, and they pressed high and put Goa’s defence under pressure. In the 6th minute, Camara broke on the counter, and he went racing into the penalty area. Just as Camara was about to get a shot off, Goa captain Sandesh Jhingan made a last-ditch challenge to halt Camara’s progress; the local crowd cheered as they saw their captain intervening.

The Al-Nassr goal came in the 10th minute when the AFC Champions League Two game turned in favour of the visitors. Abdulrahman Ghareeb made a clever pass into Angelo Damaceno. The Brazilian forward shook off his marker, then curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom-left corner of the goal to give the visitors a deserved advantage.

The home side’s defence was caught on the back foot again in the 27th minute when Al-Nassr doubled their lead. Angelo played the crucial part in the build-up again with a perfectly timed pass that released Yahya down the side of the penalty box. Yahya did well to square the ball to Camara, who, despite being surrounded by four defenders, controlled the ball perfectly and struck it into the back of the net past Hrithik Tiwari to give his team a 2-goal lead.

Brison Fernandes Sparks Hope for FC Goa

Even while the home team was behind, the FC Goa vs Al-Nassr match provided a handful of moments of brilliance by the Gaurs. Brison Fernandes, who had been subbed on for the injured Javier Siverio in the 24th minute, made his presence felt right away. In the 41st minute, Dejan Drazic surged into the final third before rolling the ball to an overlapping Brison. The young forward curled a stunning effort past Abdulelah Al Amri into the far corner, and FC Goa had a life before halftime.

After the goal, Al-Nassr almost made it 3-1 a moment later. Ali Al Hassan’s shot from outside the box was on target before a sharp save by Hrithik Tiwari kept the game at 2-1.

Second Half Brings Excitement Off the Pitch

The excitement increased in the second half when Sadio Mane, Joao Felix, and Kingsley Coman began warming up. Mane, in particular, appreciated the crowd by raising a hand just before he entered the pitch in the 66th minute.

Shortly after, Goa almost scored, as Boris Singh Thangjam broke free on a one-on-one with Bento; however, the assistant referee had signalled offside before Thangjam could get a shot away.

Al-Nassr continued to press as Mane and Felix energised the attack, but FC Goa’s defence, expertly marshalled by Jhingan, fended off the visitors for the 2-1 victory.

Tactical Insights : FC Goa vs Al-Nassr

Both the teams showcased contrasting styles on the pitch. The Saudi Arabian side relied on high pressing, and quick transitions to hurt the opponents. Meanwhile, FC Goa’s game plan of counter-pressing ended up generating spells of plays, but  a better opposition was able to neutralise their threat consistently.

The match also highlighted the depth of the Al-Nassr squad, with first-team players in Mane and Felix coming off the bench to have an impact late in the match and demonstrating what compressive pressure substitutions can have on players in a competition as intensely fought for as the AFC Champions League Two.

Standout Player Performances: FC goa vs Al-Nassr

Al-Nassr:

  • Angelo Damaceno: Initiated the scoreboard with an excellent curler.
  • Haroune Camara: Achieved the all-important second goal.
  • Sadio Mane & Joao Felix: Brought energy and pace from the bench in the second half.

FC Goa:

  • Brison Fernandes: Scored a superb goal to energise the crowd.
  • Hrithik Tiwari: Important saves ensured the score had some level of respectability.
  • Sandesh Jhingan: Organised the defence and successfully made vital tackles.

Looking Ahead to the Rematch

Al-Nassr’s win reaffirms their hold on first place in Group D – they are perfect, having secured nine points from three games in the AFC Champions League Two.

FC Goa will be disappointed at the defeat, but there were several things that puzzled them about their performance. The fact that they were able to create opportunities with a stronger opponent, Brison Fernandes’ goal, and defensive resistance, shows that the side is quickly learning from their continental experiences.

Both teams will play again on November 5 at Al-Nassr’s home field, King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh. This rematch will be significant for FC Goa to get their first point in the AFC Champions League Two and to gain more experience in playing one of the best teams in Asia.

Amit Mishra’s Take:

FC Goa demonstrated fearlessness and fighting spirit in playing with a strong Al-Nassr team in the AFC Champions League Two, yet experience and quality proved to be the difference. Although FC Goa has not won a game yet, the game was also a learning experience and a confidence booster because they proved to be able to compete with leading teams, provided that they improve their attack and keep their defence under control.
