Crystal Palace Beat Liverpool 3-2 on Penalties to Lift the 2025 Community Shield After a 2-2 Draw

Crystal Palace team celebrating victory

Crystal Palace had an exciting victory as they won their first Community Shield! They faced Liverpool and after a 2-2 draw, they triumphed 3-2 in a penalty shootout at Wembley.

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaïla Sarr both scored for Palace, while Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong scored for Liverpool. Dean Henderson was amazing! He saved two penalties and helped Palace win the game.

[REPORT] A Thrilling Contest

The 2025 Community Shield match started off really exciting! Hugo Ekitike scored his first goal for Liverpool just four minutes into the game, giving them a quick lead!

He got a pass from Florian Wirtz and kicked the ball into the corner with a low shot to score!  But the Palace answered really fast. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a penalty in the 17th minute because Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaïla Sarr in the box.

Liverpool got back in front in the 21st minute. Jeremie Frimpong kicked the ball into the box, and it flew right over Dean Henderson’s head and into the net, making the score 2-1.

The palace kept moving ahead and making opportunities. Eberechi Eze took a shot, but Alisson made a great save! Then, Mateta had a chance to score with a header, but he missed it.  At halftime, Liverpool was winning 2-1.

In the second half, both teams got some good chances. Hugo Ekitike tried to score with a header, but he missed it! Then, Mohamed Salah took a shot, but it went over the bar.  The palace kept pushing forward.

In the 77th minute, Ismaïla Sarr scored a goal to tie the game for Palace. Adam Wharton made an awesome pass to Sarr, and Sarr scored really coolly past Alisson.

When the game got to stoppage time, both teams had more chances to score, but the score was still 2-2, which meant they had to go to penalties.

[UPDATE] Henderson’s Heroics in Penalty Shootout

The penalty shootout began with a shock. Mohamed Salah missed his penalty, sending it over the bar.

That miss gave Palace a boost. Dean Henderson then saved two penalties, denying Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.

The palace kept its cool. Mateta and Sarr both converted their penalties. However, Borna Sosa hit the crossbar with his attempt.

It came down to Justin Devenny, a 21-year-old substitute. He stepped up and scored the winning penalty, sealing a 3-2 shootout victory for Palace.

[TRENDING] Palace’s Historic Victory

Crystal Palace won the Community Shield for the first time in their history. This adds to their great season.

They also won the FA Cup earlier this year. Fans and experts liked how Palace fought hard and showed strength.

Liverpool lost, and it was disappointing. They spent over £300 million on new players.

Still, they could not win the first trophy of the season. Jürgen Klopp and his team must fix their defence before the Premier League begins.

[WHAT’S HAPPENING] Reflections and Outlook

Virgil van Dijk said the loss was disappointing. He felt this way because of all the effort put into the team’s new signings.

Klopp said the defence must get better. They let in two goals against Palace. This win is more than a trophy for Palace.

It shows how much they have grown under manager Oliver Glasner.  The team is ready for the new season. They feel confident.

Amit Mishra’s Thought

I find this match exciting and unpredictable. Crystal Palace’s victory over Liverpool proves that anything can happen in football, no matter how big the clubs are.
