FIFA Qualifiers 2026- How Does it Work? Explained in Simple Terms

Fifa world cup

As one of the biggest events in the football world, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is happening soon, and there have been questions around which 45 teams will join the hosts, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. With already 18 teams qualified for the FIFA Qualifier 2026, 30 teams are still looking to secure their spot for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the qualifier is getting interesting every other day.

In this article, we’ll take a tour of how FIFA Qualifier 2026 works and how many teams are allocated for different regions across the world in simple terms.

The FIFA Qualifier 2026: How does it work?

FIFA Qualifier 2026 is going on full swing with several teams around the world competing to secure their spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As of September 15, a total of 18 teams have qualified so far, including the three host countries, the USA, Mexico, and Canada, who have gotten the automatic qualification.

Expanding the countries from 32 to 48, this year FIFA decided to take a big leap, providing opportunities for the countries that have always lagged behind in the biggest tournament in four years. With this, the qualification rules and format has also changed, where each of the six football confederations organizes the FIFA Qualifier 2026 under the guidelines of FIFA.

In this context, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has allocated 8 direct slots, along with one inter-confederation play-off place. Meanwhile, CAF has 9 direct spots and 1 inter-confederation play-off place. On the other hand, CONCACAF (North, Central America, and the Caribbean) has allocated 6 direct spots and 2 inter-confederation play-off places.

Similarly, OFC (Oceania) has now been given a 1 direct spot and a 1 inter-confederation play-off place. However, the European section of the FIFA Qualifier 2026 consists of 16 teams, expanding from 13. In this group, the teams are divided into 12 groups with 6 groups of 4 teams and 6 groups of 5 teams each. Each team will play on a home and away basis, where the group winners of 12 teams will qualify for the World Cup 2026.

On the other hand, the group runners-up of 12 teams will march to the play-offs, and the winners of the 4 paths (mini-tournament) will qualify for the World Cup.

The majority of the areas employ group phases and matches at home and away, where the winners of the groups tend to get a direct ticket, but the losing teams or other lower-positioned teams are sent to play-offs to take the remaining spots.

This increased system not only provides more nations with an opportunity to qualify for the World Cup, but also provides one of the longest and most competitive qualification processes in sport.

Current Status

As of now, 18 teams have already qualified from different regions of the world under different football confederations. Japan and Iran qualified under the AFC under the Group C and Group A Qualification, while New Zealand qualified after winning in the third round in OFC. Along with them, the other countries to qualify and shock the world include Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, and Australia under the AFC.

Amit Mishra’s Perspective

As a football enthusiast, watching the FIFA Qualifier 2026 unfold before the 2026 FIFA World Cup excites me since several teams from different regions are making their way to the biggest event in the world. The decision of FIFA to include 48 teams in the World Cup makes sense, as the participation of nations will certainly boost the sport in regions where there is not much access to it.

I also like how FIFA allocated the responsibilities to different confederations around the world so a fair competition between them can be held, without being biased. With the qualifier left to unfold, I am excited to see the fixtures and the teams that are going to the biggest football event.
