India Knocked Out of AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers Race

The Indian football team’s hopes of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers ended on Tuesday after a 2-1 defeat to Singapore at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa. Despite a bright start under new head coach Khalid Jamil, the Blue Tigers fell short again as Singapore came from behind to end India’s campaign.

Chhangte’s Screamer Lights Up Goa: Singapore Hit Back Before the Break

India began with energy and intent, playing on the front foot and pressing high in the opening half. The home fans didn’t have to wait long for a moment of brilliance.

In the 14th minute, Lallianzuala Chhangte unleashed a stunning strike from 30 yards out that arrowed into the top corner β€” one of the finest goals of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers.

India continued to dominate possession and create openings. Sunil Chhetri, Mahesh Naorem, and Liston Colaco all came close to doubling the lead. However, missed opportunities would soon come back to haunt them.

Singapore, ranked lower than India, looked second-best for most of the first half until a defensive lapse from the hosts changed the momentum.

A misplaced clearance from Rahul Bheke allowed Glenn Kweh to find Song Ui-young, who calmly side-footed the equaliser past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu just before halftime.

That single moment shifted the game. What should have been a comfortable lead for India turned into mounting frustration in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers Group C clash.

Second-Half Slip Costs India Dear

India returned from the break looking to restore control, but fatigue and sloppy passes crept in. Ten minutes into the half, a miscontrol from Nikhil Prabhu gifted Singapore possession.

A swift counter followed, with Shawal Anuar feeding Ui-young, who finished emphatically for his second goal of the night.

With that strike, Singapore turned the game on its head β€” and effectively ended India’s hopes in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers.

Coach Jamil brought on fresh legs, including Rahim Ali, Sahal Abdul Samad, and Udanta Singh, but despite late pressure, India couldn’t find the breakthrough. Udanta’s header in stoppage time went agonizingly wide, summing up India’s night.

Tactical Positives but Familiar Failings

While the result was disappointing, India’s performance showed glimpses of progress under Jamil. The players pressed high and moved the ball with confidence, something rarely seen in recent matches.

Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia) impressed in midfield, driving forward with energy, while Chhangte and Colaco created consistent threats from the wings.

Still, the same issues persisted β€” missed chances, defensive lapses, and lapses in concentration. Those moments proved decisive yet again in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign.

Singapore Stay Composed, India Run Out of Ideas

Singapore managed the game smartly, absorbing India’s pressure and breaking on the counter whenever opportunities arose. Their match-winner Song Ui-young summed it up best after full-time:

β€œAfter 30 minutes, India’s pressing dropped. We stayed calm and waited for space. That made the difference.”

For India, composure was missing in key moments. Even set-pieces β€” once a strong weapon β€” failed to produce results as Singapore’s defenders cleared every cross with authority.

India’s AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers Record

After four rounds, India sit bottom of Group C with two points from four matches. They have drawn twice (against Bangladesh and Singapore) and lost twice (to Hong Kong China and Singapore).

With just two matches left, India are mathematically out of contention for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers.

Fans and Experts React

The defeat sparked frustration among Indian football fans online, many calling it another missed opportunity.

Some praised Chhangte’s goal and the team’s attacking spirit under Jamil, but others questioned finishing quality and defensive errors that have plagued the side across the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers.

Former players urged the AIFF to treat this failure as a wake-up call. Experts have pointed to the need for better player development, sharper tactical discipline, and consistency across matches.

What’s Next for the Blue Tigers?

India will still have their remaining qualifiers in November and March with Bangladesh and Hong Kong China, respectively, but these two matches have become rather a process of confidence-building than of qualification.

Coach Jamil will also test young players and new combinations, preparing to the new international competitions.

Although the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign is a disappointment, it is also a sign of an opportunity to restart. India’s challenge now lies in turning potential into consistent performance.

Amit Mishra’s Take

The AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers of India were shattered with a 2-1 loss to Singapore at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa. Lallianzuala Chhangte scored the Blue Tigers an early goal in the 14th minute with a long-range, spectacular goal.

Nevertheless, Song Ui-young doubled twice before the break and at the beginning of the second half to reverse the tide. India had the upper hand in terms of possession and numerous openings, yet failed to utilize the opportunities, and defensive mistakes were expensive. Coach Khalid Jamil introduced attacking substitutes such as Rahim Ali and Sahal Abdul Samad, but India was not able to make it equal. With just two points from four games, India are now out of contention in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
