First competitive win since Nov 2023; India top Group B

Tajikistan vs India Summary

India stormed into the CAFA Nations Cup with vigor. At Hisor Central Stadium, they struck twice within 15 minutes and then withstood Tajikistan to win 2–1, mixing set-piece ingenuity and goalkeeper heroics.

The Tajikistan vs India result ended a long competitive drought and sent new coach Khalid Jamil’s side to the top of Group B. The match began at breakneck speed.

A long throw from Muhammad Uvais created a goalmouth scramble, and Anwar Ali headed in the loose ball despite attempts to clear off the line. Eight minutes later, Ali crossed to the far post, and Rahul Bheke’s header forced a save; Sandesh Jhingan was on hand to tap in the rebound.

Tajikistan responded in the 23rd minute when Sheriddin Boboev found Shahrom Samiev, who sprinted past his marker and slotted home. The hosts dominated after that but could not breach India’s defence again.

 Goal Breakdown

  •  5′ – Anwar Ali: Uvais’s throw flicked off several players, and Ali reacted first. His header crossed the line after a defender’s clearance deflected off a team-mate.
  •  13′ – Sandesh Jhingan: Ali recycled another throw, whipped in a cross, and when Bheke’s header was parried, Jhingan stabbed the ball into the net.
  •  23′ – Shahrom Samiev: Boboev slipped a pass behind the Indian back line, and Samiev outran Jhingan before beating Gurpreet Singh Sandhu with a cool finish.

The first goal silenced the home crowd; the second stunned Tajikistan like a bolt from the blue. Samiev’s reply provided a lifeline, yet the hosts could not seize the momentum.

Key Incidents & Performance Highlights

Tajikistan stayed in India’s side for a lot of the second half, sending balls and shots towards Sandhu. The key moment happened at 70 minutes when Rustam Soirov fell after a small push from Vikram Partap Singh, and the referee called for a penalty.

Soirov kicked the penalty low, but captain Sandhu dove to his right and stopped it. The save, along with a few more stops later, got him the man of the match award from Sportsdunia.

Naorem Mahesh almost scored with a long shot that Hasanov stopped in the 85th minute. Naorem Mahesh ran fast, making defenders nervous, and his long kick made Hasanov have to stop the ball.

The hosts kept sending the ball into the box, but Sandhu was in the right place every time. Jamil’s plan used long throws, with Anwar Ali and Jhingan taking advantage of their tallness.

Sandhu was in charge of his area; the midfield had a hard time holding onto the ball. In Tajikistan, Samiev’s running and Boboev’s ideas were good things, but the missed penalty hurt a lot.

Post-Match Impact & Next Fixtures

This win was India’s first in a competition since November 2023 and the first time in ten years that a new Indian coach won his first game. India is now in first place in Group B with three points, ahead of Iran and Afghanistan.

Next, they play against a strong team, Iran, a game that will test Jamil’s plan to focus on defense. Tajikistan is playing against Afghanistan and needs to win to stay in the game.

After the game, Jamil talked about how well they did with set plays, and Jhingan praised the teamwork. The Tajik coach Gela Shekiladze was sad about the missed penalty.

Fans cheered for Sandhu’s save and thought the win showed good progress. Shekiladze said his players were not calm because of India’s high ball play, while others liked what Jamil’s team did.

The win ended a 17-year wait against Tajikistan and showed how good a local coach can be at the international level. If India can keep the ball better and stay strong in defense, they could have a shot at reaching the final.

Right now, the Blue Tigers enjoy a win that feels like coming back strong after some tough times.

Amit Mishra’s Thoughts

This game was like seeing builders make a strong wall with easy tools. India scored goals from throw-ins and protected their goal with a strong effort.

There are problems to solve, but the determination seen in Hisor hints at a fun adventure coming up.
