A late twist gives Leeds United a memorable start to the Premier League season. The Whites had a winning start, defeating Everton 1-0 with the only goal of the match from a late penalty by Lukas Nmecha in the 84th minute of the tournament.

The penalty sparked heated debate after James Tarkowski was ruled to have handled the ball following a fierce strike from Leeds’ Anton Stach. What’s more? VAR confirmed the penalty, sparking controversy and keeping fans on edge, as reported by Sky Sports.

Late Strike Sparks Leeds Fan Frenzy!

Leeds fans are on cloud nine after a dream start to the season, celebrating an overwhelming opening performance.

On their Premier League start against Everton on 18th August 2025, they kick-started with putting intense pressure on Everton. Within the first 14 minutes, the Whites showcased their dominance with five corners. Joël Piroe had an early chance but was denied by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Leeds maintained relentless pressure with shots and set-piece opportunities. Pascal Struijk’s header was blocked on the line by Everton’s Jake O’Brien. Willy Gnonto and Daniel James also came close to scoring for Leeds. Though Everton struggled, it successfully managed no shots in the first half and barely threatened Leeds’ defense. Leeds enjoyed 12 shots compared to Everton’s zero, reflecting complete control. The half ended 0-0, with Everton surviving an intense first-half onslaught.

In the second half, the intensity continued immediately with Gnonto testing Pickford again. Everton picked up the pace with a series of attacks, including efforts from Carlos Alcaraz and a debut cameo by Jack Grealish in the 71st minute. Leeds made substitutions, bringing on players like Brenden Aaronson and Lukas Nmecha.

But the long-awaited goal finally came in the 84th minute, and it was not an effortless path. It was a controversial penalty: Anton Stach’s powerful shot struck Everton captain James Tarkowski’s arm in the box.

After a VAR review, the handball was confirmed, and referee Chris Kavanagh awarded the penalty. Despite late pressure and chances from both sides, Leeds held firm with 1-0. Also, Nmecha was awarded Player Of The Match.

How Leeds United Secured Promotion to the Premier League?

In the past season, Leeds competed in 46 league matches, recording an impressive 29 wins, 13 draws, and just four losses. The Championship title was sealed dramatically with a 90th-minute winner against Plymouth Argyle on the final day.

In cup competitions, Leeds reached the fourth round of the FA Cup but exited the EFL Cup in the first round. To conclude, the 2024-25 season was Leeds United’s highly successful season in the EFL Championship, finishing 1st, which earned them a ticket to the Premier League.

Amit Mishra’s Take

Leeds United had a very smooth start to the season and looked very strong in their performance. Everton, on the other hand, seems to have had a tough time with a difficult season last year and faced many challenges.

But you never know what happens next: teams can turn things around, and players can surprise everyone with their performance. I am hoping that Everton comes back stronger this year, and I am cheering for them.
