Newcastle Reluctant to Sell Anthony Gordon as Arsenal Circle with £75m Interest

Newcastle United have shut down speculation over Anthony Gordon’s future, making it clear the winger is not available for transfer despite reported interest from Arsenal heading into the summer window.

The Gunners’ need for a left winger has become one of the more pressing issues of their title-challenging season. Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director, is already tracking targets — Julian Alvarez among them — but the left flank remains an identified gap, and Gordon’s name has surfaced as a potential solution.

It won’t be straightforward. According to talkSPORT, Newcastle have no plans to sell Gordon at the end of the season. The club’s stance was described internally as a “big statement,” a deliberate signal that their most important attacking players are not available regardless of who comes calling. Gordon is central to that position.

Arsenal’s Interest Is Real, But the Door Is Closed

The interest from Arsenal is not new. Links between the club and Gordon have existed for some time, and with Berta now leading recruitment, the possibility of a formal approach in the summer appeared plausible. Newcastle’s response has been to pre-empt that conversation entirely.

At this stage, no bid has been made and no fee has been discussed publicly. The £75m figure in circulation reflects Gordon’s standing in the market rather than any agreed valuation between the clubs — Newcastle would almost certainly demand more if they were ever inclined to sell, which, for now, they are not.

A Season That Raises Questions About the Move Anyway

Even setting aside Newcastle’s position, the case for Gordon as the answer to Arsenal’s left-wing problem is unconvincing when the numbers are laid out.

Gordon has scored three Premier League goals this season from 21 appearances, adding two assists. That return puts him in roughly the same bracket as the wingers Arsenal are already working with — Gabriel Martinelli has one goal and two assists from 22 appearances, Noni Madueke two goals and one assist from 19, and Leandro Trossard five goals and five assists from 24 games. Combined, that quartet has contributed 11 Premier League goals between them this season.

For context, Antoine Semenyo has outscored all four of them individually — a stat that illustrates the gap between the level Arsenal need and the level they currently have. Signing Gordon would shuffle the pack without meaningfully raising the ceiling.

Arsenal supporters appear to have arrived at a similar conclusion. Reaction to the reported interest has been lukewarm at best, with fans questioning whether Gordon represents a genuine upgrade or simply a different version of a problem the club already has.

What Arsenal Actually Need

The left-wing issue at Arsenal goes beyond one player having a bad season. It is structural. The profile of winger Mikel Arteta’s system demands — someone who can operate in tight spaces, combine quickly, and still produce decisive numbers — has not been consistently filled by anyone in the squad this term.

Gordon is a hard-working, direct winger who suits Newcastle’s style. Whether he translates into the kind of player who changes a title race is a harder argument to make. His output this season, in a Newcastle side that has its own limitations, does not suggest he is ready to step in and solve Arsenal’s attacking problems at the top end of the Premier League.

The players being mentioned in more optimistic corners of Arsenal’s transfer planning — Rafael Leao, Bradley Barcola, Kenan Yildiz — represent a different level of ambition entirely. Whether Arsenal can pull off a deal for any of them is uncertain, but the logic of aiming higher than Gordon is sound.

For now, the situation is straightforward. Newcastle are not selling, Arsenal have not formally bid, and the speculation appears to have run ahead of reality on both sides. Berta will have a list, and Gordon’s name may well be on it — but with Newcastle’s position this firm and the player’s own form offering limited justification for a big outlay, it is difficult to see this one developing much further in the summer window.
