Federico Valverde scored a first-half hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night as Real Madrid beat Manchester City 3–0 in the opening leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. Guardiola’s side now need four goals without reply in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium to stay in the competition.
Valverde scored in the 20th, 27th, and 42nd minutes. Madrid played the entire match without Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo, all absent through injury. City now face the near-impossible task of winning 4–0 at the Etihad to stay in the competition, a comeback that has never been achieved at this stage in the tournament’s history.

How the Goals Went In
City started the brighter of the two sides but conceded first when Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball over Nico O’Reilly on the halfway line. Valverde got in behind, rounded Donnarumma at the edge of the area, and finished from a tight angle.
The second came seven minutes later. Vinícius Júnior flicked the ball into Valverde’s run and he slotted past Donnarumma from the left side of the box. For the third, Valverde received inside the area, lifted the ball past Marc Guéhi with his first touch, and fired past the onrushing Donnarumma before half-time.
His Champions League goal tally before Wednesday was three. It is now six. He is only the second Uruguayan to score a hat-trick in the competition.
Second Half: Donnarumma Keeps City in the Tie
Guardiola made changes at the break, withdrawing Savinho for Tijjani Reijnders, but it was Donnarumma who kept his side from a more humiliating deficit. The Italian saved Brahim Díaz’s low drive seconds after the restart, then made amends for a foul on Vinícius inside the area, having charged off his line, by stopping the Brazilian’s penalty kick.
At the other end, Courtois produced a reflex save with his leg to deny O’Reilly from point-blank range, underlining Madrid’s defensive solidity across the full 90 minutes.

Valverde’s Road to This Night
Earlier this season, Xabi Alonso used Valverde as an emergency right back. Valverde publicly said he was unhappy in the role. He drew criticism during the away game at Kairat Almaty for appearing reluctant to warm up. When Alonso was dismissed in January, some of the Bernabéu crowd’s frustration extended to Valverde as well.
Álvaro Arbeloa, Alonso’s replacement, took a different view. He called Valverde “everything a Real Madrid player should be” after he scored a 94th-minute winner at Celta Vigo last week. On Wednesday, Arbeloa played him as a right winger — the role he had under Carlo Ancelotti — and he delivered the best performance of Madrid’s season.
Before the game, a source told ESPN that Arbeloa would need a miracle to keep his job beyond this season, or alternatively, to win the Champions League. Madrid are now one step closer to the quarter-finals, where they would likely face Bayern Munich.
Guardiola’s Rotation Backfires
Arbeloa had said before the game he was expecting a surprise from Guardiola. He was right. Abdukodir Khusanov, Semenyo, and Savinho all started — three players who had featured in a rotated side at Newcastle the previous Saturday. Semenyo and Savinho were peripheral throughout the first half.
Guardiola said afterwards his side had “not much” chance of turning the tie around. In a separate interview, he suggested City had played better than the result showed. Bernardo Silva did not share that reading.
“Right now it feels really dark,” Silva said. “We need to reflect and see what we didn’t do right. Next week we will go to the game thinking we have a chance — but right now it feels really bad.”
City sit in the middle of a punishing run: two legs against Madrid, a Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, a Premier League fixture against the same opponents, and an FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool. They go to West Ham on Saturday before hosting Madrid the following week needing one of the biggest comebacks in the competition’s history.
What Next
Both clubs return to domestic action before the second leg. City travel to West Ham on Saturday in the Premier League, a fixture Guardiola will use to stabilise his squad before the Etihad showdown. Madrid host Atlético in the LaLiga derby on March 22, a result that could have a direct bearing on the title race — they currently sit second, four points behind the leaders.
The second leg at the Etihad takes place the week after. City need to score four without reply to level on aggregate. No team in Champions League history has overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit by winning 4–0 at home at this stage of the competition, though City will point to the fact that they have the crowd, the firepower, and nothing left to lose.
Should Madrid advance, they are expected to face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. For Arbeloa, a coach who was told before this game he needed a miracle to keep his job, that is now a fixture that looks possible.
