UEFA fined Real Madrid for their fans discriminatory behavior during the Champions League playoff match against Manchester City, which took place on February 19, at Santiago Bernabéu. In that match, Real Madrid won 3-1 to move to the next round of the Champions League Round 2025.
UEFA investigated the incident and found that Madrid fans had violated Article 14 of its regulations which covers racism and other forms of discrimination. However, no CCTV footage or journalist reports confirmed any specific incident.
UEFA’s Penalty for Real Madrid
Real Madrid was fined €30,000 ($31,000) by UEFA for the discriminatory incident. In addition to the fine, UEFA also has given warning to the club about possible stadium closure. If a similar incident happens within the next two years, at least 500 seats at Santiago Bernabéu will be closed for one match. This punishment is a warning for a club to prevent future violations.

What Does Article 14 of UEFA’s Disciplinary Regulations Say?
Article 14 of UEFA regulations states: “Any person or group involved in racism or discrimination behaviour will be strictly punished.”
The rule applies to clubs, players and fans, covering insults based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Real Madrid is not the only club that is facing such penalties.
