Unai Emery Hits 100 Wins in Record Time as Aston Villa Beat Lille in Europa League

Unai Emery became the fastest manager in Aston Villa’s history to reach 100 wins after his side defeated Lille 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie. An Ollie Watkins goal proved the difference in France, giving Villa a platform to build on ahead of the return fixture and ending a winless run of four Premier League games that had threatened to derail their season.

The milestone is a significant one. Emery arrived at Villa Park in October 2022 and registered his first win the following month, a 3-1 victory over Manchester United. From that result, he has gone on to record 100 wins from 181 games at a ratio of 55.2%, a figure that makes him statistically the most successful manager in the club’s history.

Breaking a Long-Standing Club Record

To understand how quickly Emery has moved through the record books, it helps to look at who he has overtaken. Ron Saunders, widely regarded as the greatest manager Villa have ever had, reached 100 wins at the end of the 1977-78 season, which was his fourth year in charge.

Saunders guided the club out of the second division, won the League Cup twice, delivered the First Division title in 1980-81 and set the wheels in motion for the European Cup win that followed in 1982. His place in Villa’s history is secure, but even he needed longer than Emery to hit the century.

Joe Mercer, who managed the club between 1958 and 1964, took four and a half years to get to 100 wins. He also won promotion and a League Cup during that time, accumulating 119 wins in total.

Going further back, George Ramsay needed 190 games during his tenure from 1884 to 1926, while WJ Smith required 205 matches in the period that followed. Emery has done it in three years and four months.

How Emery Compares to His Premier League Peers

The 100-win landmark does not just hold weight within Villa’s own history. Looking at every Premier League manager in the period since Emery took charge at Villa Park, only two bosses have recorded more wins across all competitions.

Pep Guardiola leads the way. Since November 2022, the Manchester City manager has won 139 of his 207 games, putting him 39 victories clear of Emery. In second place is Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, who has won 120 of his 188 matches in the same timeframe.

Both Guardiola and Arteta have operated with considerably larger financial resources than Emery has had at Villa, which adds further context to where the Spaniard sits in that company. The only other manager who comes close is Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, who has registered 93 wins in the same period, still seven short of the Villa boss.

That Emery finds himself in the conversation with Guardiola and Arteta at all is a measure of how far Villa have come since his appointment. He inherited a club that had just avoided relegation the previous season and has since taken them to a Champions League quarter-final, a Europa League semi-final and is pushing for a top-four finish again this season.

A Competition He Knows Better Than Anyone

Emery’s record in the Europa League is unmatched by any manager in the history of the competition. He has won it four times, twice with Sevilla and once each with Villarreal and Valencia, and is now targeting a fifth triumph with Villa. His comfort in European football, and in this tournament specifically, is a significant reason why Thursday’s result felt relatively controlled despite Villa’s recent league struggles.

He was aware heading into the game that English clubs had found the going difficult in European competition that week. Speaking after the match, he referenced those results directly.

“We respect this competition because we know the difficulties of each match away from home in Europe,” he said. “We know how it is for the English teams, like this week in the Champions League, how they were struggling.”

A Reset After a Difficult Spell

The win comes at a useful time for Villa. Before traveling to France, they had gone four games without a victory in the Premier League, losing to Newcastle, Chelsea and bottom-of-the-table Wolves during that run. A 1-0 win away from home in Europe is not a result that solves all problems, but it steadies the ship and provides a confidence boost before a demanding schedule.

Captain John McGinn was candid when speaking to TNT Sports after the game.

“We needed a reset,” he said. “The past month has not been great. We can’t dwell on it. We can learn from it but what we need to do is build and this is a building block. We know we can do a lot better but it is a good result.”

He also pointed to the fact that Villa have a significant Premier League fixture against third-placed Manchester United on Sunday, meaning the squad has little time to sit back and enjoy the result in Lille.

McGinn also noted that the performance showed signs of Villa returning to the form that had made them such a consistent force over the past two seasons. “We showed signs of getting back to our best but there’s still a long way to go,” he said.

Still Pushing on Two Fronts

Villa currently sit fourth in the Premier League, which would be enough to secure Champions League football next season. Winning the Europa League would guarantee the same outcome regardless of where they finish domestically, giving Emery’s side two separate routes to Europe’s top club competition. That dual ambition has defined much of their season, though the recent league form has made the path back into the top four slightly more complicated than it looked a few months ago.

Emery himself brushed aside the personal significance of reaching 100 wins after the match, preferring to focus on the collective. That response is consistent with the understated way he has gone about his work at Villa since returning to England. He came back to the Premier League after his difficult spell at Arsenal, where he was sacked in November 2019 after little more than 18 months in charge, and has since rebuilt his reputation thoroughly.

The numbers confirm what most observers of the Premier League have been willing to acknowledge for some time. Emery is one of the best managers in the division, working with resources that put him well behind the clubs directly above him in the standings.

Reaching 100 wins faster than any other manager in Villa’s history is a record that reflects consistency over time, not just a run of favorable results. If he can add a fifth Europa League title to that tally before the season is out, it would represent one of the most impressive individual achievements by a manager in the competition’s history.
