Reece James has signed a new six-year contract at Chelsea, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2032. Head coach Liam Rosenior described the 26-year-old as the best player in the world in his position, calling the signing a pivotal moment for the club.
James’s previous contract was set to expire in 2028. Chelsea moved early to avoid the deal entering its final year, after seeing the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively, as both ran down their contracts.
The new agreement is understood to include an incentive-based structure tied to individual and team performance. James, who earns a reported 250,000 pounds a week, is Chelsea’s highest-paid player.
James said the decision to stay was straightforward. “It wasn’t really much of a decision. I came through at the club, I love the club. I’ve experienced winning here, and I believe there’s a lot more to come in the future,” he told the club’s official website.
He acknowledged that a move elsewhere could have been more lucrative but said that money was not his priority. “Could I get more money elsewhere? Maybe, but money is not the be-all and end-all. Happiness and where I want to be means more to me. I want to win here, and we will win here.”
Rosenior’s Appraisal
Rosenior, who took charge of Chelsea in January after replacing Enzo Maresca, was unequivocal in his praise. “I can’t stop smiling because we have secured the best player in world football in his position,” he said at a pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle.
“He had many opportunities to leave this magnificent club. For him to sign a deal and put his faith in us is a massive step.”
When asked to elaborate on his assessment, Rosenior pointed to the range of qualities James brings. “He can play many different positions technically, he can score goals, he defends, his athleticism, his tactical understanding,” he said.
The manager also highlighted James’s character as a distinguishing factor. “The thing that impresses me most is his humility. You realise why he’s having, and will have, the career he’s had as captain of Chelsea. He will be our leader for as long as I’m here.”

From the Academy to the Captaincy
James first joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of six and made his senior debut in September 2019. He has since made 225 appearances for the club across all competitions and was appointed captain in 2023. His trophy haul includes the 2021 Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the 2025 Conference League, and the Club World Cup.
The current season has been his most consistent in recent years. James has played 35 times in all competitions, his highest tally since the 2021/22 campaign, after knee and hamstring injuries disrupted large portions of the previous two seasons. He underwent surgery in December 2023 in an attempt to resolve a recurring hamstring problem.
Kyle Walker, who announced his international retirement this week, named James as England’s number one right-back. Former Chelsea colleague Walker described him as a “complete” player.
Looking Ahead
Beyond his club commitments, James has set his sights on earning a place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. He missed the last two tournaments through injury and returned to international action in early 2025 after a two-year absence. He played in the 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley in November.
Chelsea’s sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, said James is the leader of the team on and off the pitch. “Having committed his long-term future to Chelsea, we’re looking forward to continuing the journey and working towards further success together,” they said in a statement.
James himself was direct about his ambitions for the years ahead. “I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes. I’m excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years.”
