Chelsea captain Reece James will miss Tuesday’s Champions League round-of-16 second-leg clash against Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge. After picking up a hamstring injury during Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United, manager Liam Rosenior confirmed his absence on Monday.
James completed the full 90 minutes against Newcastle but felt discomfort in his hamstring toward the end of the match. He did not train on Monday ahead of the second leg, in which Chelsea must overturn a 5-2 first-leg deficit against the reigning European champions.
How Serious Is the Injury?
Rosenior did not offer a specific timeline but was candid about his concern.
“We don’t know the full extent of the injury yet, but he will be out for tomorrow’s game. It could be serious. With a hamstring injury, it’s never ideal. Hopefully, we can get him scanned and find out more,” the Chelsea head coach told reporters.
Reports suggest the injury could keep James sidelined for up to two months. The Athletic reported he faces several weeks out, while French outlet RMC Sport put the likely absence closer to eight weeks. A scan is expected to confirm the extent of the damage in the coming days.
This is the tenth separate hamstring injury James has suffered since 2020. Over the course of his professional career, the 26-year-old has missed a total of 136 games through injury and fitness problems. Chelsea and their medical staff have carefully managed his workload in recent seasons, given his injury record, and he had missed only five games this season before this latest setback.

Terrible Timing After Contract Extension

The injury comes just days after James signed a six-year contract extension keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
Speaking at the time of signing, James said he was feeling physically well and playing consistently. “I’m in a really good place at the moment, my body’s feeling good. I’m playing on a regular basis, two or three games a week,” he said.
The blow is particularly harsh given the circumstances. James had also played the full 90 minutes of the 5-2 first-leg loss to PSG at the Parc des Princes the previous Wednesday, making his involvement in both legs of a gruelling week look costly in hindsight.
England manager Thomas Tuchel is due to announce his squad for the upcoming March international break later this week, and James is now expected to miss out. His participation in this summer’s World Cup could also be a concern depending on how the recovery progresses.
Further Fitness Concerns for Chelsea
James is not the only fitness worry heading into Tuesday’s match. Right back Malo Gusto was reported ill on Monday and is a doubt, while goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has felt something in his groin and is awaiting a scan. Chelsea face a challenging night with their squad stretched at a critical stage of the season.
There was one piece of positive news, however. Winger Pedro Neto has been cleared to play after UEFA issued him a warning rather than a suspension for pushing a ball boy during the first leg. Rosenior welcomed the decision, calling Neto a fantastic player and saying he had apologised for the incident.
Chelsea’s Uphill Task Continues
On the pitch, Chelsea’s situation is bleak. They need to score at least four goals against PSG without conceding to advance, a task made harder without their captain. Rosenior was nevertheless defiant, pointing to Chelsea’s 3-0 Club World Cup final victory over PSG last summer as proof his side can compete with the French club.
“The group believe, the manager believes, the fans should believe as well,” he said.
Off the field, Chelsea were also fined a record 10.75 million pounds for historical breaches of Premier League regulations and handed a one-year first-team transfer ban, suspended for two years, alongside a nine-month academy transfer ban. Rosenior insisted the sanctions would not distract from preparations for the PSG tie.
