India’s badminton campaign in the Malaysia Open 2026 received a big boost with PV Sindhu and the men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty delivering commanding performances in the season-opening BWF Super 1000 tournament at Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Axiata Arena.

PV Sindhu rose to the occasion. Sindhu reached her fourth quarterfinal at the venue in Kuala Lumpur, and the third-seeded men’s doubles pair underlined their status in the elite category by clinical wins, thus keeping India in the fray at the very top.

Sindhu Signals Strong Comeback with Semifinal Run

The Malaysia Open 2026 marked an important step in PV Sindhu’s comeback. The former world champion started her tournament with a hard-fought 21-13, 22-20 win over Taiwan’s Sung Shuo Yun in the opening round. Sindhu turned the match around after going behind in the initial stages with aggressive net play, accurate smashes and decisive defence, and saved numerous game points in the second game to clinch the match.

She then proceeded to defeat the eighth seed of Japan, Tomoka Miyazaki, in a dominant round-of-16 performance, 21-8, 21-13 in 33 minutes. Sindhu stormed to a 10-2 lead in both games and kept her opponent under pressure with thunderous smashes and tricky drop shots to keep Miyazaki on the edge.

On January 8, Sindhu had a quarterfinal match against the former world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi, but it took a short time before the Indian won the first game 21-11, and Yamaguchi had to retire because of an injury. The outcome saw Sindhu advance to the semifinals, which were the first in 13 months, and it provided a significant confidence boost before the upcoming marquee events of the season.

Satwik-Chirag Continue Relentless March

The leading Indian male doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty was also very successful in their bid at the Malaysia Open 2026. The third seeds, who came in with a 2025 World Championships bronze and their 2022 world title, started with the round of 32 with a thorough 21-13, 21-15 win over Chinese Taipei’s Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan.

Showcasing their trademark high-speed smashes and seamless rotation, the Indian duo made very few errors and managed the action during the game. They also silenced an overly enthusiastic home crowd in the round of 16 when they defeated Junaidi Arif of Malaysia and Roy King Yap 21-18, 21-11 in a 39-minute match. The win gave them the head-to-head score between them and the Malaysian pair an unblemished 4-0, which was made possible through better court coverage and deadly net exchanges.

Satwik-Chirag were set to face a high-stakes match with the sixth seeds of Indonesia, Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Fajar Alfian, making it one of the marquee men’s doubles matches of the tournament.

India’s men’s singles campaign ended early, while Sindhu and the men’s doubles pair carried the nation’s hopes forward. Lakshya Sen lost in the pre-quarterfinals to a powerful Chinese player, and even young Ayush Shetty was defeated in the same round. Other doubles combinations of Indians, such as the women’s and the mixed doubles teams, failed to advance deep into the draw.

However, the strong performance by Sindhu as well as the men’s doubles partners indicated the increasing depth of India in terms of women’s singles and men’s doubles, which are important to the long-term success and Olympic qualification phases in the face of stiff competition in Asia, powered by traditional powerhouses.

What Lies Ahead

The 2026 Malaysia Open was hosted from January 7 to 12, which witnessed the finest shuttlers of the globe perform under Kuala Lumpur’s demanding conditions, which challenged stamina and consistency. On January 9, the quarterfinal match between Satwik-Chirag and Fikri and Alfian was one of the most anticipated matches in the tournament.

In the case of Indian badminton, Sindhu’s semifinal run and the continued consistency of Satwik-Chirag can be viewed as a good beginning of the 2026 season that can set the tone for India’s 2026 BWF World Tour campaign.
