Orleans Masters 2026: Srikanth Out Early, Tanvi Advances

India’s campaign at the Orleans Masters Super Badminton 2026 produced a mixed set of results on the opening day of competition.

While former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth lost in the first round of the men’s singles in straight games, the women’s singles contingent did considerably better, with Anmol Kharb, Tanvi Sharma, and Malvika Bansod all moving into the round of 16.

Ayush Shetty also progressed  in the men’s draw, though compatriot Kiran George, along with Rakshitha Ramraj, Devika Sihag, and the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, all exited on the day.

Srikanth Falls Short Against Johannesen

Kidambi Srikanth, currently ranked 30th in the world, entered the tournament with the hope of making a deep run, but his campaign came to an abrupt halt in the very first round. The veteran Indian shuttler went down 12-21, 10-21 to Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen in a match that lasted just 26 minutes.

Srikanth made a positive start and established an early 5-2 lead in the opening game, hinting at a competitive contest. However, Johannesen quickly steadied himself, moving ahead 11-6 at the mid-game interval and eventually closing out the first game 21-12. The pattern continued in the second game, where Srikanth showed brief resistance before Johannesen strung together nine consecutive points to seal the match 21-10.

At 33 years of age, and with his ranking having dropped significantly from his peak years, Srikanth will need to produce consistent results on the circuit to reassert himself as a force in the men’s singles draw.

Shetty Gets Past Kiran George in Three Games

In the other men’s singles match involving Indian players, Ayush Shetty produced a solid comeback performance to advance past compatriot Kiran George. Shetty dropped the opening game 17-21 but rallied strongly to take the next two games 21-10 and 21-17, sealing his place in the second round. The all-Indian first-round contest gave one of the two players a guaranteed exit, and it was Kiran George who had to pack his bags after the contest went against him in three games.

Shetty’s ability to recover after losing the first game underlines a competitive mentality that will serve him well as he continues to develop on the international circuit.

Kharb Cruises in Women’s Singles

Anmol Kharb produced one of the cleaner wins of the day in the women’s singles draw. The Indian shuttler dominated her match against Turkey’s Neslihan Arin from start to finish, winning 21-12, 21-16 in a composed and commanding display. Kharb did not allow her opponent any sustained run of points and controlled the tempo of both games comfortably. The result places her in the round of 16, where she will look to continue her progress in the tournament.

Kharb has been one of India’s more promising young players in the women’s singles category, and her performance in Orleans on Wednesday was consistent with the kind of mature, structured play that has made her a player to watch on the circuit.

Tanvi Sharma Causes the Biggest Upset

The standout result of the day from an Indian perspective came from teenager Tanvi Sharma, who knocked out second seed Supanida Katethong of Thailand to advance to the round of 16. Sharma had taken the first game 21-18 and was leading 14-12 in the second game when Katethong retired from the match due to an injury.

While the circumstances of the victory meant the match was not completed, Sharma had already demonstrated her quality and composure by winning the first game against a highly ranked opponent. Supanida Katethong, who entered the tournament as the second seed, is a recognised name on the tour, and Sharma’s ability to push her to retirement while leading is a result that will boost the young Indian’s confidence heading into the next round. Sharma will now take on a fresh challenge in the pre-quarters, and her performance so far gives reason to believe she can be competitive.

Mixed Outcomes for Other Indian Women

Not all Indian players in the women’s singles draw were able to replicate those results. Malvika Bansod progressed after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo-yun 21-18, 21-14, adding another Indian name to the round of 16.

However, Rakshitha Ramraj and Devika Sihag both suffered defeats in the opening round. Ramraj lost 9-21, 15-21 to Japan’s Manami Suizu in a match that did not go her way on either end. Sihag was beaten by Lo Sin Yan of Hong Kong, China, and also failed to advance.

Mixed Doubles Exit for Kapila and Crasto

In the mixed doubles event, the Indian pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto exited in the first round after losing 21-14, 21-18 to Indonesia’s Dejan Ferdinansyah and Bernadine Wardana.

Despite the scoreline appearing relatively close in the second game, the Indonesian pair were the more consistent side across both games and did not face serious danger of losing the match.

India’s Outlook Going Forward

Despite the disappointment of Srikanth’s exit and the losses in mixed doubles, India has players in multiple categories still alive at the Orleans Masters 2026. Tanvi Sharma, Anmol Kharb, Malvika Bansod, and Ayush Shetty are all through to the second round, giving India broad representation across the draw.

The Orleans Masters is a BWF Super Series-level tournament, and progress in such events carries genuine ranking value.

The second round will provide a sterner test for all four Indian players still in the competition, and their performances over the coming days will be closely watched by selectors and fans alike. For now, the young brigade has answered with some conviction, even as a senior campaigner in Srikanth heads home earlier than hoped.
