India Out of Malaysia Open 2025 After Shetty-Rankireddy Lose in Semis

India semi-final loss Malaysia Open 2025

Though India’s top doubles pair Satwik-Chirag faced a tough defeat in Malaysia, they are more determined than ever to bounce back stronger, with the future looking bright as they aim for a strong comeback at the India Open 2025.

India’s Journey at Malaysia Open 2025 Ends with Semi-Final Loss

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, star doubles pair, faced a loss at the semifinal on Saturday, marking an end of the Indian campaign at the Malaysia Open 2025. The seventh-seeded Indian duo suffered defeat in straight games by South Korean pairing Kim Wonho and Seo Seung-jae, who won the tie 21-10, 21-15.

In comparison, the Indian shuttlers struggled to get their act together against the unseeded Korean pair, as the 40-minute contest turned out to be a severe test. The defeat has thus brought an end to India’s hopes at the BWF Super 1000 event in Kuala Lumpur.

A Close Look at Shetty-Rankireddy’s Performance in the Semi-Finals

The match started on a difficult note for Chirag and Satwik, who trailed 6-11 at the first break in the opening game. The Koreans, known for their quick reflexes and sharp net play, didn’t allow the Indians any room to make a comeback. The first game wrapped up in just 19 minutes.

The Indian pair seemed promising as they led 11-8 at the interval in the second game, but errors started creeping into their game, and Koreans made the most of every opening that came their way. As Kim and Seo continued with their momentum, the match slipped away as they sealed it in straight games.

Reflections from Satwiksairaj Rankireddy

Speaking to reporters after the match, Satwik gave credit to their opponents. “They played really well and didn’t give away any easy points. We tried to stick to our game plan, but they were just better today. It’s disappointing, but it was a good learning experience for us,” he said.

Satwik also accepted that perhaps the team had not been bold enough and consistent in those crucial phases. “We began more serenely in the second match, but maybe we wanted to have needed fire and attitude on the court,” said Satwik.

Chirag Shetty’s Perspective on the Loss

Chirag echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need to work harder and stay focused in high-pressure situations. “We gave away a few easy points when we were ahead in the second game. Credit to them for maintaining their composure and playing smart,” Chirag said.

Despite the loss, the Indian pair looked optimistic about their future, vowing to come back stronger in the next tournaments.

The Tough Challenge: Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae’s Dominance

It has been an unbeatable team during the tournament: Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae, who showed their real character in the final steadiness under pressure and taking over at crucial moments. His credentials are impeccable: current World Champion Seo, to Kim, a silver medalist from Paris 2024.

Satwik confessed, “They didn’t let us settle at all. It was their consistency, and ability to force the errors from us, which made it really difficult.”

Strong Start and Consistency from the Korean Duo

Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae were focused right from the start and were brilliant in their game as they took an early lead in the first game. Sharp serves from them, coupled with anticipation of the Indians’ moves, kept the Indians under pressure.

The Korean pair had a great day at the net, and their pace across the court left little room for the Indian duo to attack. By the time Chirag and Satwik found their rhythm, the Koreans had built a strong lead and won the first game comfortably.

In the second game, Kim and Seo were unruffled and steady as India attempted a brief fightback. Fast transitions to attack from the back and steady play helped them stay in control and counter every Indian attempt to push forward. The Koreans thus wrapped up the match in straight games with a confident performance.

Key Factors That Led to India’s Struggles

India’s loss in the semi-final of the Malaysia Open 2025 came down to a few key factors:

  • Unforced Errors: Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy made several mistakes at crucial moments, especially in the first game. These errors disrupted their rhythm and gave easy points to the Koreans .
  • Lack of Aggression: The Indian pair struggled to match the fast-paced, aggressive style of Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae. Playing defensively at key moments allowed the Koreans to control the rallies.
  • Net Control: The Koreans dominated the net, with Seo’s quick reflexes and Kim’s precise placements leaving little room for India to gain an edge.
  • Missed Opportunities: Despite leading 11-8 in the second game, India couldn’t maintain their advantage due to misjudged shots and missed chances to build momentum.

This match highlighted areas where the Indian duo can improve, and with the India Open 2025 coming up, they will be eager to bounce back stronger.

Looking Ahead: India Open 2025 and Future Prospects

After the Malaysia Open 2025, Chirag and Satwik will turn their attention to the India Open Super 750 starting on January 14, in New Delhi. The two will go up against Malaysians Wei Chong Man and Kai Wun Tee in the first round.

“We will be excited to play in front of our home crowd and will give our best to go deeper into the tournament,” Chirag said.

The Malaysia Open 2025 marked a disappointing end to India’s campaign, but for the country’s top doubles pair, this experience may be a stepping stone toward bigger things to come in the new season.
