A Legend bids farewell! After 18 glorious years, badminton star Tai Tzu Ying announces retirement, leaving behind countless memories and inspiring generations.
The notice doesnβt come out of the blue, as a matter of fact, she hasnβt been very active in the sport over the past two years. The 2021 BWF World Championship shared an emotional message on 7th November 2025.
Tai Tzu Ying Announces Retirement : The Reason
The 31-year old has been suffering from persistent left knee injury since late 2023. Just as we were beginning to speculate, Tai Tzu Ying announces retirement. She withdrew before the semifinal match at the 2024 Japan Open due to this knee injury sustained during the quarterfinal match against Natsuki Nidaira.
Moreover, she participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics with knee braces on both knees. She was eliminated in the group stage, defeated by Thailandβs Ratchanok Intanon, losing 19-21, 15-21, which ended her campaign. After the Olympics, she didnβt return to the intβl circuit.
She disclosed in an interview, the 2024 season was particularly difficult, with surgeries on both her left and right knees.
As Tai Tzu Ying announces retirement writing, βI don’t want everyone to see me so vulnerable, so I can’t give you a perfect retirement ceremony. I’ve chosen to tell you this news here.β

Tai Tzu concluded by saying she hasnβt decided on next steps yet. Additionally, sheβs looking forward to life without an alarm clock and away from competitive sport, ending on a heartfelt note: βThank you all again for being part of my journey.β

- 2009: Secured the silver medal at the Asian Junior Championships
- 2014: Won a bronze in women’s singles at the Asian Games.
- 2016: Achieved world No.1 ranking; held it for 214 weeks total.
- 2017: Won her first Asian Championships title.
- 2018: Won gold at the Asian Games; won the All England Open for the first time.
- 2020: Won silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics; BWF World Tour Finals and second All England Open title.
- 2023: Secured third Asian Championships title; won World Tour Finals for the fourth time.
