15-Round Fights Return? Turki Alalshikh Strongly Opposes WBA’s Proposal

World Boxing Association (WBA)

Aficionados of boxing are talking a lot about the 15-round fights potentially making a comeback. The World Boxing Association (WBA) recently asked to make fights longer than the usual 12 rounds, causing a lot of talk in the sport.

This move takes us back to long ago, when great fights were decided in the last rounds. But not everyone is happy about the idea. Turki Alalshikh, a big name in boxing today, does not like this idea. He says it could be very dangerous for boxers.

The History Behind 15-Round Fights

To get the issue, we need to look at the past of 15-round fights. Before 1982, most big boxing matches were set for 15 rounds. But this changed after the sad fight between Duk Koo Kim and Ray Mancini.

The tough match hurt Kim badly, making boxing leaders think about how to keep the sport safe. The WBA, and other groups, made the title fights shorter to just 12 rounds.

Later, studies showed that long fights make brain injuries much more likely. Getting hit a lot over many rounds can make fighters more likely to get serious with lasting injuries. So, the shorter format became normal, keeping competition and boxer safety in check.

WBA’s Shocking Proposal for 15 Rounds

Gilberto Mendoza, the World Boxing Association (WBA) president, said he might think about changing the 12-round limit. What he suggested did surprise a lot of people in boxing, making some feel excited and others worried. Some boxing fans like the idea and want to see tough fights like before, but others worry it might be bad for the fighters’ health.

Turki Alalshikh’s Firm Stand Against 15 Rounds

In a recent chat with Ring Magazine, Turki Alalshikh said clearly: “I don’t support this idea at all. It’s not good for a boxer’s health, and I would never support fights going back to 15 rounds. I think a 12-round fight can be too hard on a fighter’s health, but 15 rounds is not okay at all.”

Alalshikh is worried about how long fighters can keep fighting, and the rules to keep them safe. He is changing boxing with events like the Riyadh Season. He thinks boxing should grow by focusing on overall boxer’s health and safety, not looking back at old, risky ways.

The Debate: Spectacle vs. Fighter Safety

The idea has split the boxing world. Some people think that having 15 rounds makes fights more exciting, tough, and smart. They think that boxing is not as special as it used to be because of new rules today. But, health experts and sports analysts say there could be risks if fights go on too long.

Key Arguments Against 15-Round Fights:

  • Increased Risk of Brain Injuries: Scientific studies show that prolonged fights lead to greater damage due to repeated impact on the head.
  • More Fatal Incidents: Past cases like Duk Koo Kim prove that fighters are more vulnerable to severe injuries in later rounds.
  • Impact on Fighter Careers: Longer fights could shorten a boxer’s career by accumulating long-term damage.
  • Modern Safety Standards: The 12-round format checks how strong and skilled someone is without too much danger.

How AI and Technology Are Changing Boxing’s Future

Turki Alalshikh has said no to 15-round fights, and is working to make boxing safer. One of his new ideas is to use AI as a judge to make scoring in the sport clearer.

He wants to make boxing better for the future, not go back to old and unsafe ways. Riyadh Season is doing well, and Alalshikh is working with UFC President Dana White. He wants to help fighters, and make sure they stay healthy.

What’s Next for the WBA’s Proposal?

Gilberto Mendoza said, “We should think about 15-round fights again, but we do not know if the World Boxing Association (WBA) will make a rule change. Many important people, like Turki Alalshikh, do not agree with this change, so it is having a hard time.” But, the talk has started up old arguments about how boxing can mix fun and keeping fighters safe.

Possible Outcomes:

  • The WBA abandons the idea due to backlash from key figures and health organizations.
  • A compromise is reached, such as testing the format in non-title fights.
  • More studies are done to check the possible risks before making a final choice.

Conclusion

Boxing has changed over time, making rules that work better now. Some fans might want long fights, but keeping everyone safe is the most important thing.

Turki Alalshikh is saying no to this idea. Fighter health matters more than looking back at old times. As people talk about it, one thing is clear: boxing’s future needs to focus on both fun and safety.
