International Boxing Association Announces Manny Pacquiao as Vice-President

Manny Pacquiao Named IBA Vice-President

In a historic development, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao has been officially appointed as the Vice-President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) – this means that one of the sport’s iconic athletes is now within global boxing governance.

The announcement was made at the meeting of the IBA Board of Directors in Manila, which fittingly took place on the 50th anniversary of the famous “Thrilla in Manila” fight. Pacquiao’s new job is a rare and historic transition from sports icon to global sports leader.

“Manny Pacquiao is an international superstar who is beloved around the world. His life story embodies the spirit of the mission of the IBA – giving every child every chance to box.” Said IBA President Umar Kremlev in regard to the Filipino athlete sharing the IBA’s vision.

Pacquiao’s Role: Leading Boxing’s ‘Golden Era’

In his newly assigned role, Manny Pacquiao will collaborate with IBA President Umar Kremlev towards the organization’s ambitious “Golden Era,” which is focused on turning boxing into a professional sport, generating opportunities for boxers, and ensuring boxing remains free from political nonsense.

The International Boxing Association stated that Pacquiao will contribute towards the President’s and Board’s strategic work, promote IBA values globally, and serve as a representative of the IBA at major international events.

Even in his role as a non-voting member, Pacquiao’s contribution will be his thoughts, experience, and his ability to engage the boxing community, particularly in regards to the protection of boxers, the development of youth, and the expansion of the sport globally.

“I think under the great leadership of President Umar Kremlev, the IBA has entered the Golden Era – an Era where every boxer can dream, compete, and succeed equally,” Manny Pacquiao said, giving his assurance that his work would make sure that “no young boxer is left behind.”

Building Bridges: From the Ring to Leadership

For more than 20 years, Manny Pacquiao has been an inspiration and role model for people who want to do great things. He started out as a poor kid in General Santos City and worked his way up to become one of the best boxers in history.

Joining the International Boxing Association is the next natural step in his lifetime goal to help disadvantaged sportsmen and bring people together through sports.

Pacquiao said he wanted to build bridges “between amateurs and professionals; between East and West; between generations and cultures.” He said that boxing “brings people together in a way that politics does not.”

This message fits with IBA’s new role in the world of boxing, which is based on respect, fairness, and inclusion amongst countries.

Why Does Pacquiao’s Appointment Matter?

This is a very important time for boxing around the world, and Pacquiao’s inclusion in the IBA’s leadership levels is a big deal. The International Boxing Association has had a few problems in the past few years, the most serious of which were issues about how it was run and its recent temporary loss of Olympic recognition.

However, under Kremlev‘s leadership, IBA is working to rebuild credibility through transparency, an athlete-first agenda, and greater international partnerships. Pacquiao’s participation is likely to help establish that credibility, particularly in Asia, where boxing continues to grow quickly.

Pacquiao’s high-profile international persona, as well as his altruistic track record, link well with IBA’s focus on physically and socially moving forward at the grassroots development level and on youth development.
“Pacquiao’s appointment gives IBA a moral voice – a person who sees the hardship and the hope in athletes,” said a senior boxing analyst.

Strengthening Boxing Beyond Borders

The IBA has started a number of programs as part of the Golden Era concept. These include subsidies for children’s boxing academies, better training programs for officials, and programs to stop doping.

Pacquiao’s role as vice president of the IBA will probably help these programs reach new places, especially in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, which have been left out of the global boxing scene.

Thanks to Pacquiao’s long-standing advocacy for young athletes through the Manny Pacquiao Foundation, he is very much a part of IBA’s developmental goals.

Legacy Meets Leadership

The appointment of Pacquiao is a big deal for the Philippines, a country with a long history in boxing. The Philippines has produced boxing champions who have made the sport more popular around the world since the days of Gabriel “Flash” Elorde and Nonito Donaire.

Now, as the country is represented by Pacquiao in the international governing role, the influence the Philippines makes within the sport extends further than the boxing ring into international governance.

Some sports writers view this as an appropriate continuation of Pacquiao’s legacy, where he can help shape its future as opposed to simply celebrating its past.

A New Era for Global Boxing

Boxing is ready for a new awakening in unity and honesty now that Manny Pacquiao is in charge of the International Boxing Association.

Pacquiao’s tale, from a hungry teenage fighter to a world champion to a worldwide sports statesman, is the very heart and soul of boxing: strength, optimism, and purpose.

As the IBA enters its Golden Era, Pacquiao’s presence behind the organization could shape not only the future of the IBA but the future of the sport.

“Boxing can change lives, change communities, and create peace where there is separation,” Pacquiao stated. “That is the power of our sport — and our collective responsibility.”

Pankaj Kapoors’ Take:

Eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao was appointed Vice-President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) at its Board meeting in Manila. The move is a fresh start in Pacquiao’s career as he joins IBA President Umar Kremlev to spearhead the sport’s “Golden Era,” emphasizing integrity, athlete welfare, and global unity in the sport of boxing.

Pacquiao pledged to “build bridges between amateurs and professionals” and offer equal opportunities for all boxers around the world. In the role of Vice-President, Pacquiao will provide strategic advice to the IBA, promote the sport across the globe, and support the sport’s development programs.  His appointment aligns with the IBA’s mission to preserve boxing from political interference and enhance the integrity and inclusiveness of the sport.
