First-Ever Olympic Esports Games Scheduled for 2027

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that the first-ever Olympic esports will happen in 2027.

Although initially planned for 2025, the event was postponed due to game selection issues, a new hosting and financial model, and other structural arrangements delayed due to limited time.

Thomas Bach, President of the IOC, said that the qualification competition for the Olympic Esports Games would start this year. This will provide national esports teams a chance to compete for a place in historic events.

Key Partnerships Shaping the Olympic Esports Games

The success of the Olympic Esports Games depends on strong partnerships.

The IOC has joined a partnership with the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), making it the main partner of the event.

The EWCF, known for organizing the Esports World Cup, will help choose the games, set tournament rules and ensure fair competition.

Another important partner is the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC), as Saudi Arabia will host the event for the next 12 years.

Hence, the IOC and SOPC will work together to improve the national esports structure and follow Olympic standards, making esports more organized and professional.

Additionally, a special six-member committee co-chaired by IOC member Ser Miang Ng and Saudi sports minister Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Saud has been formed to finalize the game selection and event details.

Possible Challenges for the host nation

Here are some challenges for the first-ever Olympics Esports Games 2027:

  • Game Selection: The primary challenge is the IOC’s strict rules regarding the selection of games that fit with the values of the Olympics. In an effort to avoid violent shooter games, the committee will go with the e-versions of traditional sports. However, violence has been an innate part of on-field sports; concussions are one of the major injuries among athletes, young and experienced. So, the question remains: what will be re-imagined?
  • Financial Model: Unlike traditional Olympic sports, e-sports depend heavily on game publishers. The IOC is working on a fair business model that benefits both the Olympics and the gaming industry.
  • Qualification Dilemma: The esports tournament has a slightly different format from traditional sports. Although the objective is the same, to get qualified for the progressive events, how it gets done will be a thinker. The IOC and EWCF must collaborate on qualification rounds and periods that work for all participating countries.
  • Event setup, streaming, & Marketing: Esports need special seating with a gaming station and large screens for both players and audiences. Also, most esports fans watch games online, so the IOC  must build a strong streaming system without any hinges to increase viewership. Marketing will play an important role in attracting sponsors and other organizing bodies.
  • Esportswashing- Saudi Arabia is expanding esports growth with the 2027 event but has also faced a lot of criticism for its human rights, with an emphasis on women’s rights and LGBTQ+ issues. Many are raising concerns about “e-sportswashing,” the country using global esports recognition to improve its reputation.

To solve these issues, the IOC will introduce qualification pathways ensuring fairness.

The inclusion of the EWCF and major game companies like Riot Games will also help to make tournaments more organized.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Influence on Esports

Saudi Arabia has been investing huge amounts of money in esports gaming in recent years.

The Public Investment Fund (PIF) has bought shares in major esports companies like ESL FACEIT Group and Hero Esports.

In addition, Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, hosted the Esports World Cup, offering millions in prizes for popular games like Call of Duty, Fortnite and Street Fighter in 2023.

Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia continues to expand its role in the global esports industry and has become a major hub for competitive gaming.

The first Olympic Esports Games, set for 2027, is a huge recognition for esports, a historic moment in awakening.
