Who Is Xyaa Real Name, Age, Biography & Gaming Career

Xyaa is one of India’s most followed gaming streamers. She plays Valorant, CS:GO, and PUBG, and has been streaming for over seven years — first on Twitch, then on YouTube, where she has built a following of 637,000+ subscribers. She is among the very few female gaming creators in India to have turned streaming into a full-time, sustained career.

Most people who follow her only know the alias. This article covers the rest — her real name, her background, how she got into gaming, and what she has built since.

Xyaa’s Real Name

Xyaa’s real name is Shagufta Iqbal. She goes by “Xyaa” across all her platforms, and most of her audience have never heard the name Shagufta — she keeps her personal life largely separate from her streaming identity and rarely brings it up publicly.

Where Does the Name “Xyaa” Come From?

Before landing on Xyaa, she used “Ninja” as her gaming name, borrowed from the famous American streamer. She eventually moved on from it.

The name Xyaa came from a female YouTuber who had a cat by that name. Shagufta liked it, took it, and made it her own — something she has jokingly described as effectively stealing a cat’s name. Short, easy to remember, and distinct enough to stick. It worked.

Early Life and Childhood

Shagufta was born on May 15, 1994, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. She grew up there with her family, including a younger sister who played a big role in her early gaming life.

How Gaming Started at Home

Her father, Mr.Iqbal, was a software engineer, which meant computers were already a normal part of home life. But the real gateway into gaming was a magazine. Her father had a subscription to diGit — a popular Indian tech magazine that used to include two CDs with every issue, one of which was always a flash gaming CD. Shagufta and her sister would play through every game on those CDs. That was how it all started.

From there, the two sisters moved on to bigger titles: Age of Empires, Captain Claw, The Goonies, and Adventure Island. Her very first gaming memory, though, is even simpler — playing Nintendo TV games with her younger sister at home. She has been playing since the age of 12.

What Did She Want to Be Growing Up?

Like most kids, Shagufta had a few ideas about what she wanted to do with her life. She first wanted to be an astronaut. Then she shifted her interest toward fashion and beauty. Neither stuck. She eventually became a full-time gamer and content creator — which, in hindsight, was always where she was headed.

The Game That Changed Everything

The real shift happened when she played Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) in 9th standard (around age 14–15). That was the moment gaming stopped being just something she did for fun and became something she genuinely cared about at a deeper level.

She got so into gaming during her college years that she would bunk classes just to play. That kind of dedication — even at the cost of attendance — tells you a lot about how serious she was about it, even before she thought of it as a career.

An Introvert Who Found Her Voice Through Gaming

Something Shagufta has openly discussed is that she is actually quite introverted in real life. She is quiet, reserved, and not someone who naturally seeks out big social situations.

Gaming became her way to deal with that. She started playing DOTA 2 specifically because it is a multiplayer game that requires her to communicate and interact with players from all over the world. It was her way of pushing past her shyness in a low-stakes environment.

When she goes live on stream, however, the shift is dramatic. She becomes loud, expressive, funny, and fully engaged — almost unrecognizable from the quiet, reserved Shagufta that exists off-camera.

Education and Career Before Streaming

Shagufta completed her schooling in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. She grew up and studied entirely in Bhubaneswar. She did her Bachelor’s in Computer Science Engineering from Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University (SOA University), graduating in 2016. During college, she picked up Java, SQL, C, C++, and Informatica. She was also making regular trips to cybercafés to game — often at the cost of attending class.

Career Before Streaming

After graduating in 2016, she joined Capgemini in Pune as a Senior Software Engineer. Capgemini is a global IT services company operating in over 50 countries. Getting a senior role there at 22, straight out of college, was not a small thing. In September 2018, she moved from Pune to Bengaluru and continued working as a software engineer while simultaneously growing her YouTube channel, which she had just switched from Twitch to in October 2018.

Quitting her Job to Go Full-Time

In 2019, at 25, she quit her job at Capgemini to stream full-time. Although her family opposed it, she stood by her decision and relocated to Pune, then later to Bengaluru. The fact that she walked away from a career in software engineering lends weight to her story. She wasn’t a teenager with nothing to lose. She was a working adult who chose to take a real financial and social risk — and it paid off.

Xyaa’s Gaming Career: The Full Timeline

Shagufta started gaming online at age 11, but her professional streaming career began much later.

  • 2011 — She starts playing CS 1.6 online. This is the beginning of her competitive gaming exposure.
  • 2018 (January) — She launches her professional streaming career on Twitch.tv.
  • 2018 (October) — She moves from Twitch to YouTube. This turned out to be a pivotal decision. YouTube had a significantly larger Indian audience, and its growth picked up quickly after the switch.
  • 2019 — She quits her software engineering job to stream full-time. Around this time, she also parts ways with Entity Gaming (a well-known Indian esports organization she was previously associated with) and becomes an independent creator.
  • 2020 — She crosses 200,000 subscribers on YouTube and 83,000+ followers on Instagram. She officially partners with Logitech G.
  • March 2023 — Represents India as part of Team Top-G at the NESC 2023 female CS: GO qualifiers. Top-G wins 2-1, becoming the first Indian female CS: GO team to qualify for the World Esports Championships.
  • July 2023 — Travels to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the WEC 2023 Asian Qualifiers. Team Top-G finishes top 4.
  • October 2023 — Wins Streamer of the Year (Female) at the India Gaming Awards Season 2.
  • 2024 — Attends the HP Omen Event in Los Angeles — her first major international creator event outside Asia. Nominated at the National Creators Award (PM Modi’s initiative) as the only female esports nominee.
  • December 2025 — Signs with Revenant XSpark, the creator vertical of Revenant Esports.

Her subscriber and follower counts have continued to grow since then, and she remains one of the most active and consistent Indian gaming streamers today.

Games She Plays

Xyaa is primarily known as an FPS (First-Person Shooter) gamer, though her content spans several genres.

CS: GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive)
This is where it all started. She began with CS 1.6 in 2011 and evolved with the game over the years. CS: GO streams showcase her strongest technical skills — sharp aim, smart rotations, and strong game sense — built over more than a decade of playing the franchise.

Valorant
This is the game she is most associated with right now. Valorant is a tactical FPS developed by Riot Games and has become its most-watched game. She explains her decisions as she plays, which makes these streams useful for viewers looking to improve their own game.

PUBG (PC and Lite)
PUBG was one of the games that helped her build a large audience early on. Her commentary style — fast, funny, and reactive — worked particularly well with PUBG’s chaotic, unpredictable gameplay. She played both the PC and Lite versions.

Apex Legends
A fast-paced battle royale FPS developed by Respawn Entertainment. She added this to her content to keep things diverse and cater to a broader FPS audience.

DOTA 2
As mentioned earlier, she originally started playing DOTA to push herself out of her introverted comfort zone. It was more personal than professional, but she has also streamed it.

Awards and Recognition

Streamer of the Year (Female) — India Gaming Awards Season 2 (October 17, 2023)

She won this award at one of India’s most recognized gaming industry events, beating out other top female streamers in the country. The India Gaming Awards (organized by IWMBuzz) is one of the most prominent awards events in the Indian gaming industry. It covers the full spectrum of the space — game developers, esports athletes, streamers, content creators, and organizations. Season 2 was held on October 17, 2023, at the Westin Mumbai Garden City, Mumbai, and was livestreamed on Loco. The ceremony was hosted by Bollywood actor Salman Khan.

World Esports Championship 2023 — Top 4 Finish

This is her biggest competitive achievement, and arguably one of the most important moments in Indian women’s esports history. As part of Team Top-G, she represented India at the WEC 2023 in Riyadh, which featured a $500,000 prize pool and 130+ countries competing. Finishing top 4 in a global tournament of that size, as part of the first Indian female CS: GO team to qualify for it, is her biggest competitive achievement.

National Creators Award Nomination — 2024

In 2024, she was the only female nominee from the esports category at the National Creators Award, an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognizing India’s top digital content creators. Being the sole female esports nominee in a country-level award of this scale reflects how far ahead of the field she is.

Brand Partnerships

Xyaa has worked with several major brands in the gaming and tech space:

Intel India — Gaming Ambassador

She has named this her biggest professional milestone as a streamer. Being Intel’s gaming ambassador in India was significant not just commercially, but personally — Intel was the brand she grew up around. Her father’s computer, the machines at school, the rigs she admired in gaming cafés — Intel was always there. Getting a formal ambassadorship with them years later meant something beyond just the brand deal.

Logitech G — Official Streamer (July 2020)

One of her first major corporate partnerships. She joined the Logitech G Streamer Programme in July 2020, which involved representing the brand at events, creating content for their India social media handles, and advocating their products publicly. Logitech G makes gaming mice, keyboards, and headsets — some of the most commonly used gear in the Indian gaming community. For an independent female streamer to land this in 2020 was notable.

H&M x Animal Crossing — with Maisie Williams

She was part of a campaign between H&M and Animal Crossing (Nintendo) that also featured actress Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones. It was a fashion and gaming crossover — not the usual territory for an FPS streamer — and put her in front of a very different kind of audience.

Revenant XSpark (December 8, 2025)

She signed with Revenant XSpark — the creator vertical of Revenant Esports — on December 8, 2025. She became the second female creator in the lineup, after Kaashvi Hiranandani. Other creators in the XSpark lineup include Triggered Insaan (Nischay Malhan), one of India’s largest YouTubers. On joining,  Revenant CEO Rohit Jagasia said, “Xyaa has been a role model for aspiring gamers across the country. She is the evolving face of Indian esports and her presence in the team is in line with our commitment to bring diversity in India’s creator-driven gaming ecosystem.”

Other brands: HP, Lenovo, HyperX, MSI, Tencent Games, Ubisoft, Loco.

International events:

EventLocation
Acer Predator LeagueTokyo, Japan & Manila, Philippines
IEM (Intel Extreme Masters)Sydney, Australia
Ubisoft Preview EventAbu Dhabi, UAE
HP Omen EventLos Angeles, USA (2024)

The LA trip in 2024 was her first major creator event outside Asia. She has talked about it as an experience that gave her a clearer picture of how global gaming culture operates — and how much room there still is for Indian creators to expand their reach internationally.

Challenges She Has Faced

Online gaming communities, particularly around FPS games, can be unwelcoming to women. Shagufta has spoken openly about receiving negative and hostile comments simply because of her gender.

Her approach has always been to ignore it and keep going. She has said clearly that gaming is what she loves, and nothing is going to stop her from doing it. She did not soften her content to avoid attention, and she did not quit when things got difficult. She kept streaming, kept improving, and grew her audience on her own terms.

This kind of consistency — showing up every day regardless of the criticism — is a big part of why she has lasted in this industry when many others have not.

Her Impact on Women in Indian Gaming

When Shagufta started streaming in 2018, women in Indian gaming content creation were extremely rare. The esports and streaming space in India was almost entirely male, and women who tried to enter it often faced hostility rather than support.

She stepped into that environment and built something real. Today, she is one of the most frequently cited examples when people talk about women in Indian esports. Younger female gamers and aspiring streamers regularly name her as someone who showed them it was possible.

The broader context matters here, too. India had an estimated 120 million online gamers by 2019, a number that has grown substantially since. The spread of affordable mobile data made live streaming accessible across the country — and a significant portion of Xyaa’s audience comes from non-metro cities and towns, not just the big urban centers.
