Scotland Strike First
Scotland drew first blood in the sixth minute. India lost defensive shape momentarily and conceded a penalty corner, which McEwan converted to put the visitors ahead 1-0. India responded with sustained forward pressure.
Lalremsiami Hmarzote earned the first penalty corner for the hosts, but Udita’s drag-flick went wide. A second penalty corner followed in the 14th minute, though a trapping error allowed Scotland to break on the counter before Sushila cleared the danger.
India Fight Back to Lead at Half-Time
India levelled in the 17th minute through a second-quarter penalty corner. Despite another trap fumble, Navneet Kaur reacted quickly to recover the ball and drive a finish past Scottish goalkeeper Jessica Buchanan. Scotland pushed back immediately, earning a penalty corner in the 22nd minute, but Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi produced a fine save to deny Amy Costello’s drag-flick.
India took the lead just before half-time through a moment of opportunism. A penalty corner rebound struck the woodwork, and Sunelita Toppo was alert to tap in the loose ball and give India a 2-1 advantage at the break.

Scotland Level, India Waste Chances
Scotland equalised early in the third quarter. In the 33rd minute, a well-constructed passing move set up by McEwan allowed Fiona Burnet to finish and level the score at 2-2. Scotland then controlled possession for much of the next seven minutes, limiting India’s attacking opportunities. India recovered to earn three consecutive penalty corners late in the period following a combination between Lalremsiami and Rutuja, but could not convert from any of them.
Late Pressure Not Enough for India

The fourth quarter saw India push hard for a winner without success. Buchanan made a crucial save from an early penalty corner, and a sharp attacking run by Baljeet in the closing minutes went unrewarded for lack of a teammate in the circle. India won their ninth penalty corner of the match with two minutes remaining, but Buchanan was again equal to the rebound chance that fell kindly for the hosts. The match ended 2-2.
What’s Next
India face world-ranked No. 23 Wales in their third Pool B match on Wednesday. The Hyderabad tournament is one of two qualifying events for the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup, with the other taking place in Santiago, Chile.
The teams finishing first, second, and third at both venues earn direct qualification for the global showpiece, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30. The best-placed fourth-place finisher across the two tournaments will also secure a spot.
