Pakistan Could Join FIH Pro League If New Zealand Withdraws

pakistan hockey team celebrating win

A ray of hope has emerged for the Pakistani national side as they might return to one of the most prestigious hockey leagues in the world, the FIH Pro League, following the rumors of New Zealand withdrawing from the tournament due to financial reasons. Pakistan lost the spot to participate in the FIH Pro League after they were bested by New Zealand in the final of the FIH Nations Cup.

Let’s learn more about the potential return of Pakistan amidst New Zealand’s growing financial struggle.

[TRENDING] Pakistan’s Return at the FIH Pro League

The FIH Pro League might feature lots of surprises and disappointments, as one of the major hits to the tournament has been recorded. New Zealand, which won the prestigious FIH Nations Cup against the Men in Green, had less chance of participating in the FIH Pro League after the New Zealand hockey federation addressed the struggle to secure enough funds to support a full-season campaign.

With hockey still being considered an amateur sport in New Zealand, the financial burden on the players and the association is legitimate, and they might not be able to fulfill the criteria of the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The formal invitation by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to Pakistan has even added the confirmation of the Pakistan hockey team joining the prestigious global tournament.

According to the news reported by THENEWS, “A crucial meeting between New Zealand hockey officials and government representatives is scheduled for next month, which is expected to decide the fate of the Blacksticks’ participation in the 2025-26 Pro League.

Initial feedback from sports authorities in New Zealand indicates a reluctance to commit funds for the team’s full-season travel and participation. A final verdict is expected within the next 20 days.”

Similarly, under FIH rules, the next-in-line team from the lower-tier competition will be offered the opportunity to move up when a Pro League side drops out.

Pakistan hockey has received a major boost, as the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has officially invited the national team to participate in the upcoming edition of the FIH Pro League.

With this, Pakistan’s incredible campaign in the Malaysia Cup will not go to waste since they can further compete in the most competitive international hockey tournaments.

[UPDATE] Why is This Big for Pakistan?

Tournaments that feature only the highest-ranked teams, like Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, India, and Argentina. Participation in the FIH Pro League would be a big deal for Pakistan, as it is a bigger step in providing exposure and opportunity to showcase skills and talents, and that too on a global stage.

For Pakistan, the league is the platform where they can prove what they really are. The additional benefits for Pakistan from the FIH Pro League are

  • Regular matches against the best teams in the world that have been competing on the global stage.
  • Greater visibility for the sport in Pakistan directly benefits the association.
  • An opportunity for the team to climb up the international ranking.
  • It was a chance for the team to restore faith and pride against the world, which once was a dominant force in hockey.

Pakistan’s return to the FIH Pro League might just be viewed as a golden ticket given for free, but let’s not forget that the team dominated the FIH Nations Cup in Malaysia and marched to the final. However, they lost to New Zealand by a huge margin of 6-2, which led them to miss the tournament.

Jyoti Sharma’s View on Pakistan’s Return to FIH Pro League

As a hockey enthusiast, it is sad to see how New Zealand is withdrawing out of the tournament despite winning the FIH Nations Cup, but the potential return of the Pakistan national team in place of New Zealand will certainly boost the confidence of players and the association while representing themselves in one of the prestigious tournaments.

Pakistan’s proud legacy might not be going to waste after the rumors of New Zealand withdrawing from the tournament, giving the well-deserved opportunity for the Men in Green to play against ranked teams in the world. We all hope for the best for Pakistan and other teams in the FIH Pro League.
