American Golf legend Matt Kuchar, who was once heavily criticized for not paying enough to his local caddie, has once again made the headlines before returning to the competition.
Following the controversy that happened in 2018, Kuchar had to issue a public apology regarding the controversy, which also led to the deterioration of his reputation among the golf legends.
What exactly was the controversy that is headlining after 7 years? Letβs find out.
The Incident: What Happened at the Mayakoba Classic?
Following the win at the Mayakoba Classic that took place in the year 2018, Matt Kuchar didnβt pay his local caddie, David Ortiz, who was promised to be provided with an industry-standard 10 per cent from his $1.3 million payday after his victory in the tournament.
Having 18 titles in his name and sitting in the World No. 4 position across the globe, the 46-year-old faced criticism from the public, especially golf fans, addressing the unfair move by the golf legend who has been associated with the game for several years.
According to the agreement made between Kuchar and his caddie, David was supposed to earn Β£748 ($1,000) if both missed the cut; if David had made the cut, he would receive Β£1,496 ($2,000) and Β£2,244 ($3,000) if he achieved a top-20 finish.
Similarly, David would also be due Β£2,922 ($4,000) if Kuchar had finished in the top 10 in the competition, but the amount following the win in the competition was not agreed upon.
However, after the win in the respective tournament, Kuchar only paid Β£3,739 ($5,000) in cash to Ortiz, on which the caddie made a statement saying that despite the golfer winning Β£969,000 ($1,296,000), he did not receive 10 percent of the winnings, as most of the caddies receive.

The controversy was hyped up and created a buzz across all social media platforms, causing the legendβs reputation and fame, which he had built over the years, to be damaged.
Kuchar also admitted that he was ashamed that his family members and relatives were talking about things that should not be happening.
He further added, βI think I’ve always tried to make her proud. I’ve got kids of my own, you try to set a good example. I’m disappointed in myself. It’s a moment I’m not proud of, but it’s one of those things you do your best as a father to teach kids lessons, and there’s no better thing than to show them you do your best to make it right and try to keep moving forward and stay positive.β
Apology and Resolution
On the other hand, Ortiz was not holding back from the unfair treatment he received from his partner after winning the Mayakoba Classic. During the phone interview, Ortiz said that on Sunday, after the tournament, he received an envelope with cash in it.
He counted and was expecting a bonus check for winning, as he thought he had not been paid in full what he deserved. Oritz also announced that he was parting ways with the golf legend following the pay dispute, despite describing him as a good person and a great player.
In response to the statement, the golf legend Matt Kuchar issued an apology, saying, βThis week, I made comments that were out of touch and insensitive, making a bad situation worse. They made it seem like I was marginalizing David Ortiz and his financial situation, which was not my intention. I read them again and cringed.
He further added that in his entire career, he had tried to show respect and positivity, but in this particular situation, he was not able to live up to the values or expectations that he had set for himself.
The situation got worse, leading Kuchar to continue playing at the highest level with his regular local caddie, John Wood.
