Legendary 54-year-old golfer Phil Mickelson is eyeing retirement, hinting that this year’s U.S. Open could mark the end of his storied career. While Mickelson has played most of the LIV Golf matches in the 2025 season, his participation in the PGA Championship and The Masters is evident as well.

Mickelson’s Statement on U.S. Open 2025
Phil Mickelson, who has had a very interesting relationship with the U.S. Open for the past few years, has hinted at his last appearance at the major tournament. Talking about his further plan in golf, Mickelson took a dig at the tournament that gave him so many heartbroken moments.
The six-time U.S. Open runner-up said on the triumphant Sunday at Kiawah Island, “It’s very possible that this is the last tournament I ever win. Like, if I’m being realistic.”
While he could still be competitive in the upcoming major tournaments, his hunger and eagerness to win the title have been less compared to previous years, but looking to help his teammates on LIV’s HyFlyers squad.
However, if his contribution to the tournament does not seem fruitful, then he might step away from that, too.
“I’m also going to be 55 in a couple of weeks, so I want to be realistic there, too. I want this team to succeed. I don’t want to hold it back. If I’m holding it back, then it’s time for me to move on and get somebody else in here,” Mickelson said.

What’s Next for Mickelson?
Following the conclusion of the U.S. Open on June 15, Phil Mickelson is still on the verge of earning an automatic invitation to the 2026 U.S. Open, as he is currently in the 15th position in the ranking table.
Recently, the USGA in February made a statement regarding the automatic spot given to the leading player in LIV Golf’s final individual standings for the year.
However, golf fans will certainly miss the rivalry of Mickelson with other top golfers like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, and Rory McIlroy, who are in the elite list of winning the most Grand Slams in their careers.
Despite having no Grand Slam, the legacy of Mickelson is still the most talked about, as his six major titles have tied for 12th all time, sitting alongside the legends of the game, Lee Trevino and Nick Faldo. The feat is considered incredible, especially for someone who did not win any major titles until the age of 34.
Mickelson has won a total of six major championships, including the Masters three times, and won the PGA Championship at the age of 50. He is now set to participate in the U.S. Open at the Oakmont Country Club, starting from June 12 to June 15.
So, this might be the last opportunity for Mickelson to win the trophy that has been slipping away from his hands as runner-up in the years 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2013.
