On the first day of Ryder Cup 2025, Team Europe delivered a dominant performance seizing a 5 1⁄2 – 2 1⁄2 victory over Team US on their own American home soil. After more than a decade, Europe has finally managed to gain the lead over the US on the first day. The last time Europe gained a lead was in 2004.
Team Europe were fluent in both foursomes and fourballs. Across the morning and afternoon sessions, the U.S. side fumbled on multiple occasions, failing to convert seven critical match opportunities.
DeChambeau’s High Hopes End in Disappointment
DeChambeau began a match showing great showmanship, carrying an American flag on the opening day, but the gesture was not matched with results. In context, DeChambeau and Justin Thomas suffered a 4 & 3 loss to John Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.
In a four-ball session, DeChambeau was paired with Ben Griffin, and the duo narrowly lost 1 up to Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.

Rahm-Hatton: Team Europe’s Power Pair
The pairing of John Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton proved to be decisive in Team Europe’s dominance. In their first match, they showed great adversity. Their dramatic incident almost led to the rules call.
Despite the incident, they defeated DeChambeau/Thomas with the scoreline of 4 & 3. Rahm and Hatton form their duo in fourballs, also. The duo bagged a 3 & 2 win over Scheffler and Spaun, proving their great chemistry in big moments.
Additionally, Rahm’s performance on the first day gained him momentum and confidence, showing her experience to seize control over tough matches.
Where the U.S. Missed Seven Spots?
Team US had a very flawed campaign. The matches were plagued by several missed chances and inconsistent performances. In some of the matches, they gained momentum with an early lead but failed to close them out to secure the win.
Scottie Scheffler notably went 0-2 on Friday, becoming the first world No. 1 to lose both opening day matches in over two decades.
Despite having great overall stats, he failed to perform under pressure, which shows that having good numbers doesn’t always win you matches.
Additionally, highly rated duos like Morikawa/English underperformed against deep European duos like McIlroy/Fleetwood.
Europe took full advantage of the situation, winning seven match spots that made a huge difference in the final scoreline.

The duo of Rahm-Hatton thrived in the Ryder Cup 2025. Meanwhile, DeChambeau’s failed campaign saddened a whole American fan base. The U.S.’s inability to convert those seven critical chances may prove lethal and cost them the whole tournament.
On the other hand, if Europe maintains composure and confidence in the upcoming games, it will possibly take the trophy home. These wins will give upper psychological edge to the team Europe. Team America needs to get their head straight and maintain a great character, and continue performing in the remaining crucial matches.
