Every once in a while, a young talent comes along who captures hearts and inspires others with their passion and determination. Olivia Harland, an 11-year-old from Barnard Castle in County Durham, is doing just that — by teeing up for the Junior World Golf Championship in California this summer.
What started as a fun outing with her grandad has now turned into a remarkable golf journey, taking Olivia from local fairways to one of the biggest stages in junior golf.
From Local Greens to Global Dreams
Olivia picked up golf at the age of six, thanks to her grandfather Robert Manners, lovingly known as “Gramps.” He introduced her to the game, and it quickly became more than just a hobby. With regular coaching from Aaron Cox at Blackwell Grange Golf Club, Olivia began entering competitions around County Durham.
Over the last two years, her dedication has paid off in a big way. After countless hours of practice and numerous local tournaments, she took part in a national qualifier at The Belfry — the historic home of the PGA. There, Olivia stunned everyone by winning the competition by three shots, securing her place in the Junior World Golf Championship in the United States.
“I enjoy doing competitions. They’ve gone quite well and I’ve been bringing my handicap down,” Olivia said.

Fundraising for Her American Dream
The Junior World Golf Championship will be held at the iconic Torrey Pines Golf Club in California from July 5 to 10. But getting there comes with a hefty price tag. Olivia’s family has started a GoFundMe campaign to aid with the costs of travel, admission fees (which alone cost $500), lodging, and equipment.
Her mother, Caroline Harland, who works as a teacher, has already raised £800 through the fundraiser, and is hoping local businesses or sponsors will step in to support the young golfer’s dream.
“She works really hard at it, she has coaching three or four times a week. Her grandad is proud as anything,” Caroline said.
Caroline has even had to arrange time off work to accompany Olivia to the US for the tournament — something the family has never done before.
Big Dreams, Bigger Heart
What makes Olivia’s story even more special is the grounded joy she finds in the game. She’s not just chasing trophies — she’s chasing a dream that started with family and is now supported by a whole community.
“It’s not every day you get to go to California to play in an international final. I was very shocked that I was going to be able to play in America,” Olivia shared.
Looking ahead, Olivia hopes her performance in the Junior World Golf Championship might open doors to a golf scholarship, as scouts are expected to be present at the event. But for now, she’s just focused on doing her best and enjoying every moment of the journey.
